The United States of America has an unfair and biased democracy. This statement may seem strong or biased in itself, but take a look at the youth of our nation and read it once more. Youth are held back, told that they, too, might make a difference some day, but aren’t allowed to make that difference quite yet. Currently it is easy for the younger people of our nation to be completely detached from present-day politics. In a nation struggling to provide the equality and democracy it so values, taking one step forward and allowing 16-17 year olds to vote would put forth our country’s morality and beliefs. There is no reason that this age group shouldn’t be able to vote. Youth have the ability and education level to vote, and not only would letting them vote increase voter turnout, but it would also stand up for our nation’s value of democracy. Allowing teens to vote would increase overall voter turnout all throughout the United States. By letting adolescents vote, it establishes voting as a habit. Over time, this will increase turnout (Top ten). Voter turnout has been less than impressive over the years, with an all time low in 1998, only 36.1% showing up to the polls, even fewer than after World War II (Lankford38). Low voter turnout in the United States today is largely due to the “hassle” that comes along with getting registered and getting out to vote (Regan). This is very discouraging, for it shows that the people of our nation have ceased to care about politics, or
On the voting age there are many people that think teenagers cannot vote .They should be allowed too. Teenagers are young adults. That should have the same right as regular adults do. Just because of their age, many people think they’re irresponsible. They need to consider young adults are just like regular adults.
British dramatist Shakespeare once said that there are a thousand Hamlets in a thousand people’s eyes. Through the ages, controversies about voting age have not quieted down, and there are more and more different opinions about voting age like it should increase to 21, or it should decrease to 17 or 16, even 13. Like a coin has two sides, each opinion has both advantages and disadvantages. In my opinion, I prefer the voting age to be 18 in the United States. Teenagers who are 18 years old are independent enough to make their own decisions, and they should have the vote right as other adults do.
Imagine a time where teenagers are allowed to vote on important positions or issues that could possibly define our nation’s future. The average teenager may seem responsible, but would they be able to handle the responsibility of deciding our nation’s fate in the world as well as their own. In the article, “ Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history making moment at the polls,” Annys Shin, who writes in depth about the historical event as well as shares valued opinions of those who participated in the making of this event, exclaims that the, “ Montgomery County community [was] the nation’s first to lower the voting age from 18 to 16.” This seems to be a test to determine if the nation should lower the voting age completely. However, this test shows varying results, but majority seem to shed some light on the fact that teenagers simply should not take part in voting. The average teenagers seem too young to be mature about issues, are uninterested in what major decisions are made by the government, and are simply being used by their parentals for an extra person support their own beliefs.
By allowing 16 years old to vote, it could make them more interested in politics. Before voting, they will want to investigate about each party and the policies they have. Which in turn could will make them more interested in politics. There is an urgent need for younger people to get involved in politics and by lowering the voting age this could create a new wave of politicians. By allowing 16 years old to vote, schools will have to teach politics in school and go into greater depth about politics.
At 16 we are considered as young adults – accepting responsibilities of our own action – should we not then be treated as one too and hold a position in the political world to prove that we can be trusted to cast our vote wisely. Who is to say at what age we have entered the adulthood mentally and are mature enough, responsible enough to finally be able to vote. Giving the vote to young adults would force politicians to take our needs and desires more seriously instead of it being neglected. By not allowing
America has been built on the idea that as citizens, we have the choice to decide what is the best for our country. Millions of Americans cast their vote every election day to make sure their voices are heard on who is going to run their country and what new policies they will bring with them. As stated in Anny Shin’s article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history-making moment at the polls,” voting is a, “valuable privilege,” in which many don’t realize. In the United States, not every is allowed to vote, only 18-year old citizens are allowed to vote. However the number of 18-year olds voting is very low and this has been an issue in the political for quite a while. The concerns and desires of most millennials are not being expressed as many are not voting. Many, like the city of Takoma have proposed to allow 16 and 17-year olds to vote as they believe that voting among millennials will increase.
Allowing teens that are sixteen and seventeen vote is a good idea because many kids have a dream of their own. Ben miller, who is one of the first sixteen years olds to vote stated “it's a valuable privilege”, Which in all ways he's correct not many countries allow their younger generations to vote. After the “26 amendment gave 18-year-olds the right to vote” (shin) the rate of voter registration want up. The younger teenagers are considered more likely to vote than the elders. This showed a small difference in the outturn making it a better chance for whatever candidate to be chosen. Although, Miller did not have a driver's license yet he was still able to vote because of his “pre-register” which allowed him to vote “through the Motor vehicle administration”(shin). Even though his mother was a”writer and whose father does international relief and development work”(shin), he was
In the article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history-making moment at the polls,” by Annys Shin, many teens who are 16-17 years old can now vote during the election. The decision was made by the Takoma City Council that in Montgomery County Community, they are the first ones in the nation to lower their voting age from 18-16 years old. A group of 350 students from Montgomery Blair High School were granted the right to vote in elections and one of the student who got the right to vote, Ben Miller had said, “ It’s a valuable Privilege,” and he means that it is a great advantage that many 16-17 years old can now vote. Many young adults who are the age of 18 are most likely not a good age to vote because many of them are planning to leave their childhood homes. And they can lack of discipline and causes them not to vote.
In her article, “Takoma Park 16-year-old savors his history making moment at the poll,” Annys Shin explains into debt of the issue of whether or not 16 and 17-year old citizens should be allowed to vote. I believe that 16 and 17-year olds should be allowed to vote because they are affected by many of the political issues that are being debated on today.
People believe that citizens should vote at an age higher than 18 because voting at 18 is not recommended. They believe that citizens are still too immature to understand politics and the world around them. Others believe that 18 is the right age to vote since that’s when someone is considered a legal adult. I believe that teenagers should also have a say in politics. If the government wants everyone to participate then the youth should also vote as long as there’s an overall comprehension of political science. Many young men and women can get educated on topics regarding politics. There are many young people who have potential in politics and feel that it is unfair that they can’t participate and state their political beliefs only because they are not at the age to do so. Another flaw with the representational democracy would be that immigrants cannot vote ; only U.S. citizens are eligible to vote. Immigrants are part of this nation. They are the reason for economical boosts. Immigrants obtain difficult jobs( landscaping, construction, farming etc.)
We hold these Truths to be self evident because we want our voices to be heard. Teens should be allowed to vote because their opinion would be heard in this country and should be shown through teen’s eyes. Many Teens will take these matters seriously and will like the idea that they are impacting our country in many different ways, including contributing and practicing their democratic
I agree, that 16 and 17 year old citizens should have to right to vote. The legal voting age in America is 18 years old, and it has been that way for about 40 years. They were given that right when the the 26th amendment was passed, and ever since it has been passed, there was no real dramatic increase in the voting rate. Young people didn't really pay attention to politics, usually because at that age, 18 year old already had a lot to deal with in their daily lives.
In Takoma Park, Montgomery County, young 16 and 17 year old are doing what most of the citizens their age can’t, vote. In result of that, it raises the question, why isn’t this privilege available to all citizens across the nation? Students who are 16 and 17, across the nation should be granted the right to vote because they are the generation that in this age in society, are most aware of the political hype especially during election years. As well as the fact that they are old enough to understand the issues around them, are taught in school about politics and what most officials want, can increase voter turnout.
Also, letting sixteen-year old’s vote could start a political “war”. Like in Lincolns second inaugural speech he talks about how neither party will expect a war at this magnitude, also he talks about each will look for an easier triumph. This is probably due to how the candidates will start to target the young population so they are guaranteed voters at the polls. But You are labelled mature enough to get your driver’s license, get married or even move out and get a job at sixteen, so why shouldn’t you be able to exercise your legal right to vote. I mean just like everything else you could have to go through steps so the government can regulate who does what. For example, when you first get you license at sixteen for the first six months you can only drive your immediate family. Then when you hit six months you can drive one passenger not a part of your immediate family. At one year, you can drive as many passengers as you want. So, I think just like every other big responsibility/freedom you are given at sixteen you should be able to vote also.
Why can’t we all just vote, 16 years old or 20 years old aren't we the same. Teenagers nowadays want their own rights to vote for who should be the new president or anything else, so for me i support the idea of making teenagers vote.
