On October 13th, I watched the Democratic Debate, hosted by CNN, in the Terrace with many other students from Larzelere. I decided to begin to inform myself about politics and potential presidential candidates, since I will be a voting citizen by the time the next election rolls around. Coming from a poor small town community in northern Michigan, there is little involvement and education for politics. Voting is a private issue, and our government class was basically limited to the three branches of federal government. By attending the debate, I hope to become more educated about the politics in America, and be a more informed voter.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, Martin O'Malley, Jim Webb and Lincoln Chafee were the five candidates present at the debate. Since they were all democratic, I expected a more

They discussed a variety of different topics, such as troops on the ground in the middle east, tax increases, scandals, and many other issues. One prominent debate subject was the email scandal that Hillary Clinton was involved in earlier this year, when she deleted suspicious emails off of her private Secretary of State server. A major point against Bernie Sanders was the fact that he refused to serve in the Vietnam war and many of the other candidates bashed him, insinuating that he would not make a good military leader because he was a pacifist. Another major concern was gun control laws. Bernie Sanders supported gun control, while Jim Webb believed that gun violence goes down when more people are allowed to carry guns. These small differences in beliefs highlight each of the differences between each candidate, subtle but they can make all the difference in gathering votes. I felt that many of the participants tried to talk
New Orleans, Louisiana was greatly influenced by Greek ancestry and culture. It has taken many different aspects of Greek culture that have impacted the different traditions we have today, such as architecture, city elements, and Mardi Gras. Greek influenced New Orleans street names as well as Mardi Gras. New Orleans architecture was affected by Greeks and we also have many sites in New Orleans that we're affected by greek culture.
I have noticed from my friends that even though the election is over, the dialogue has not stopped. Instead, people are more vocal about their options and thoughts. I agreed when Professor Gillespie stated that she does not look to the government to have all the answers, because they too are human, and are flawed. I enjoyed how both sides had good arguments and were able to back up their positions. When students posed questions, they answered them with thought. Listening to two different perspectives allowed me to see how people think differently that I do, but in the end just want the best for their
In the New Hampshire primaries, many candidates in both Democratic and Republican categories. The candidates who do not follow the political views society deems as better rose to the occasion of winning the votes in both categories. The intense primaries depicted strengths and weaknesses in all candidates and the immediate decision for its representatives Trump and Sanders. Two main points that were arguably the most eye catching was the clear win of Sanders against Hillary and the shocking results in the runner ups of the Republican party.
The care of human life and happiness, and not their destruction, is the first and only object of good government,” Thomas Jefferson. This quote explains one of the many reasons Jefferson created the Democratic-Republic party. The Democratic-Republicans resisted the idea of a new federal constitution, they stood for states rights in opposition to a central Govt, and strict interpretation of the constitution. If we could, the people of 2016 America would vote for the Democratic-Republic party because of their stance on immigration, funding the national debt, and the Jay Treaty. The main idea of the Democratic-Republican party was, to represent the interest of the common free man.
We hold debates between the Republican and Democrats before the primaries, and then we hold debates between the two remaining presidential candidates. Upon first glance it may appear that the presidential debates are held to get to know the candidate’s positions on the various issues that are important to the American people; however, the format of the debates make it difficult to accomplish that task. Instead, it is more plausible that these debates are held in order to discover what the candidates are like personally because the debates provide ample opportunities for us to discover the candidate’s values. Ultimately, we want to find out the values that these potential presidents have because we want someone we trust to lead the
As the election creeps increasingly closer nervous liberal onlookers had all their attention on the Democratic National Convention. On Monday, the 25th of July, Bernie Sanders approached the podium in the Philadelphia Convention Center to deliver his much anticipated speech. Although a formal announcement had not been made on the nominee, most individuals knew that the race was all but over for Mr. Sanders. With that being said, the audience which was overflowing with liberals, could not have been more upset with the imminent nomination outcome. The audience 's age gap varied but many of the crowd were in the 20-40 year old bracket. Given these points, my decision on the success of Sanders rhetoric will be given at the end of this paper.
In the following essay I will be talking about the disadvantages and advantages of partisan elections for state politics. I will also examine the last couple year's election results and costs. Finally, I will discuss if partisanship made a difference in the vote, as well as if a judge should be decided by partisan vote. In the next couple paragraphs I will talk more specifically about these topics.
The question posed by both Madison and the Framers in the 85 “Federalist Papers” and Dahl in his book How Democratic is the American Constitution? is how effective the Constitution is at promoting the ideals of a democracy. For Dahl, there are several issues surrounding the Constitution, from its drafting, to its ideology, to its relevance. By analyzing Dahl’s critiques of the Constitution in terms of the parallels that exist between factions and the two-party system, the issue of unequal representation, and the necessity for the Framers to compromise on their ideals to ratify the Constitution, Dahl defined a clear argument based in his general disapproval for the Constitution. However, by combining Dahl’s critiques with potential rebuttals from the opinions and perspectives of Madison and his fellow Federalists, it is evident that both Dahl and the Framers believed that if the constitution was completely successful, then the lives of the American people would be enhanced. While Dahl believed that the Constitution, ultimately, has not fully protected the rights of all persons, he, like the Framers, focused on the particulars of government that must be improved such that the American life is bettered.
The United States of America is known to have two major political parties. The Republican party and the democratic one. Both parties are based on views and principles being completely opposites of each other. The Republican party is known to be a conservative party, while the democratic party is known to be liberal. Two concepts that are opposites to each other. The democratic party will most certainly convince the majority of the people that it is the ideal party to remain in office because it promotes economic equality, it advocates civil rights and individual freedom, and because it is a liberal party.
“I think it is always great to have this debate especially, it’s nice to see who you are voting for,” said Begic. “Sometimes people are blindly voting or not voting at all and at least with the debate, you can see what is going on. It was mainly important because you get to see how a person reacts and see them answer questions honestly.”
The debate I am choosing to watch is the Republican Presidential Debate, and my focus would be on examining Donald Trump’s portions. The debate of course, is about Republican candidates who are running for president (intended for the next four years) debating to the public on who is a better choice to vote for. In the broad sense, Republicans takes on conservative stand on issues. They believe the federal government shouldn’t play a big role in the citizen’s lives. Most Republican wants lower taxes in addition to less government spending on social programs such as healthcare, food Stamps and education. The portions that I am looking at would be the part where Trump talks about building a border wall and also where he speak of immigration. It
Since the middle ages, corporatism has taken a leading role in countries by involving different organizations into a group of people to develop cooperative associations on the basis of shared interests. In Europe, corporatism was the main objective of people in a country. For example, Lewis Mumford note that the basic society "was based on classes and ranks" and there was no guaranteeing demand through security and no power that did not recognize the legal obligations of a corporate profile (Mumford). Once democracy began to spread and become definite in the United States, the Americans began to experiment with new ideas and values. In America, corporatism began to evolve into a new system where the knowing of freedom and justice was
Another four years another presidential debate. Before I go on to the current debates let me state a few facts about past ones. The Lincoln and Douglas debate was in important because it started Lincoln presidential career. The Debates lasted from August 21 -- October 15. There where seven of them, with two days to two weeks in between. Each debate lasted three hours; first candidate spoke for one hour; the second for one and a half hours; the first replying for a half hour. Candidates alternated going first. The topics involved where primarily slavery and the Union. Other important debates were the '48 and '57. They were the only debates before 1960; there were no presidential debates between 1960 and 1976. In
Through out the history of our own existence men and women alike have pondered and questioned whether there truly exists a force that controls all aspects of our existence. In order to answer these questions men have gone on spiritual quest for not only knowledge of god, but to shed light on our own lives. Men like Geoffrey Chaucer take us on a quest to dig deep within our souls to answer our own question. In Chaucer’s collection of tales entitled, The Canterbury Tales The tales deal with a group of pilgrims of all social classes in search for forgiveness to the shrine of Thomas a Becket. The pilgrims all seek knowledge they cannot have but still try and find that knowledge within each
Candidates have a chance to present their ideas to the citizens through debates and other platforms that are available for the candidates. It provides a platform for the citizens to debate important issues with the candidates and among themselves.
