Demonstrative Speech: Greco-Roman Wrestling

For starters, wrestlers like myself hate having to wear headgears. They limit the skills of the wrestlers. Wrestlers like to be free when wrestling. They like to feel as if nothing is holding them back, and that pushes them to do their best. Put a headgear on a wrestler, and their game changes. They go from being great, to feeling stuck. A headgear is like prison for the head. It feels as if the head is put behind bars. It is a foreign object stuck on your head. No matter how hard you try to shake it off and ignore it. It is still there.

Wrestling is one of the oldest sports, and it has a lot of historical background. Wrestling was established in the 15th and 16th century, but it was not a competitive sport at the time. There have been cave drawings of wrestling found from 3000 B.C., which shows that either the sport or at least ideas about the sport have been around for a long time (Olympic). It was during the pioneer days that wrestling’s popularity began to grow. In Canada, there was a wrestling champion from each of the small villages and settlements. After the champions were crowned, they would all compete against each other and whoever won was the best of the best (Wrestling). A wide variety of people were involved in wrestling, even some presidents, including Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. Washington was good enough to win a tournament, and at one point in history, there was a style of wrestling named after him. That style, however, is no longer used in today’s sport.

Tumbling is getting more and more popular across the globe. The hype all started when Gabby Douglas won the 2012 World Olympics. One of the signature tumbling passes of gymnasts around the world is the round off back handspring back tuck. This tumbling pass is not as easy as it seems. What people don’t realize is that in order to have the perfect technique like Douglas’, you must gain momentum during the round off, maintain good body control during the back handspring, and get as much height as possible during the tuck.

Fights were similar to those of freestyle wrestling, as shown by drawings and inscriptions from that time. The holds in this chapter are interchangeable and it does not matter what side of the body I decide to apply the hold too. My goal is to remain “flexible” and as I transition to the back of the person I take what the person is giving me. One thing to keep in mind with these standing holds is if the person is similar in size to me or extremely combative, I am not necessarily trying to keep them in one place. If the person is able to move around some that is fine; I just move my feet with them and keep my body tight to theirs. When I make the person carry my body weight around it can be exhausting for them. I often make my opponent carry my weight around in Grappling or Mixed Martial Arts. In my experience most people do not train properly for this and they get tired much quicker than they anticipated from me constantly “clinching” with them.

You shoes miss their mark and slide slightly down before settling in on the small plastic holds. When you reach a big gap between holds you will put your right foot to the handhold a foot lower than your hands. Shift your weight onto your foot. Wrap your arms around the giant handhold you are grabbing. It may be big but is slippery. Push downward on it with all your strength. Your elbow is now completely bent. Try as hard as you can to straighten it. Reach as far up as you can with your right hand and just barely grab the next hold. Now the finish hold. Put your foot further out and push sideways against the hold. When you do that you will notice the discomfort in your left shoulder not used to the pressure of that much weight, and the sickening feeling of fear. Lunge for the finish anyway. Fully commit. There will be a moment when neither one of your arms is grabbing onto anything on the wall. Grab the finish, and hold on as tightly as you can, for your legs will swing sideways and crash into part of the wall. When you jump down you will forget to let your legs collapse. Don’t let that bother you later on.
