I observed a second year student in the dental clinic who was incredibly enthusiastic, genuine, cheerful, and helpful, and her personality would fit perfectly into what I consider the typical dental hygienist. She seemed very well prepared and confident in her ability to treat her patient. A dynamic conversation was held throughout the appointment with her easygoing and cooperative patient. Besides the appropriate clock and chair positions, I was not aware of many proper techniques when I observed at the beginning of the semester. I noticed the student kept the patient chair in the same position for treating the maxillary and mandibular teeth. I observed her for the full four hours including the preparation before her patient arrived until …show more content…
She asked the patient if she was experiencing any pain, and with confirmation from the patient, Dr. Douglas took a look at her sore throbbing area later in the appointment. After taking the blood pressure, the intraoral and extraoral exam was done rather quickly with no abnormal findings. I have never had my teeth probed before, so I enjoyed seeing her probe each tooth to get a better feel of what the procedure will entail. The patient had excellent teeth, and Dr. Douglas did not find any caries. Radiographs were not taken since she had them done in our clinic six months ago.
III & IV. Dental Hygiene Diagnosis & Treatment Planning/Care Plan: Overall the patient had excellent homecare and was a Calculus Level One. There weren’t any risk factors discussed with this patient, but her concern about the throbbing in her upper jaw was addressed. Her general goal of the appointment was to keep her plaque score the same or lower since she was at 14%. She was a Periodontal Case Type Two based on the bleeding from probing, bone loss, and previous radiographs. The patient said she has been flossing more and is really trying to maintain her plaque score.

Prior to applying for Calhoun Community College’s dental assisting program we are required to complete eight hours of dental observations. My observations were completed at Valley Smiles Dental Care in Athens, Alabama and also Limestone Smiles in Athens, Alabama. Observing the groups narrated the dynamics of two distinctly different private practices.
Minimal calculus and plaque were recorded. The patient was treated over 2 appointments for scaling and polishing under local anesthesia.
Being a first year student at the Fortis Institute Dental Hygiene School, I have experienced many wonderful things. I have made new friendships, enhancing my learning experience, furthering my career, and my personal favorite experience, clinic. I have learned many techniques from observing the other students during this time. Also, being in the clinic had shown me that being an RDH is what I want to do. In my essay I will discuss my Fears, experiences, observations, my new found confidences, and finally how my view of Dental Hygiene has changed.
Young children and many adults are terrified of visiting the dentist. The first clinician they would see is the dental hygienist, making it extremely important for the dental hygienist to be kind, understanding, and easy to talk to. These characteristics will allow patients to be at ease and enjoy their dental visits. It is also important for dental hygienists to be good listeners so they could understand their patients` concerns. Physical skills are just as important as interpersonal skills in this career. It is important to have good finger dexterity and near vision. These physical skills will come to good use because the job of dental hygienists require them to use instruments in the small area of a patient's mouth. It is also crucial that a dental hygienist be in good physical shape. Dental hygienists spend most of their time crouched over a patient which could result in back pain if the hygienist is not healthy and
In clinical settings next fall and spring I intend to use research methods to assist my patients in achieving patient’s human needs. Before starting to work on the patient the treatment plan based on each patient’s need will be developed by me. As a dental hygienist student I would provide efficient educational methods by administering evidence-based facts when preparing individualized patient-centered
The career I am pursuing is dental hygiene. Dental hygienists clean patient’s teeth, examine the mouth for diseases like gingivitis. My mom works for a pediatric dentist and I spend a lot of time at her work. That’s what made me choose this career. I love the atmosphere and how friendly everyone is.
As dental hygienists, we will see a variety of patients in our dental office. Each patient will present with a unique medical history. It is essential to know how to treat our patients to the best of our ability, so that they are comfortable and cared for throughout the entire treatment process. They might have a certain disability, disorder, or disease that may alter or affect how we treat them.
better the process and the causes of periodontal disease ( I talked to the patient
After shadowing Dental Hygienist I have learned a lot about what is expected in the profession. Some traits that I found are very important to posses are, being able to properly communicate with your patients, be very detailed oriented, and have a positive and patient personality.
My work experience in general dental practises allowed me to see first-hand the work that a dentist accomplishes on a daily basis. I learned many valuable lessons during my placements, from the importance of infection control, to the intricate tasks that dentists have to perform on a set time scale. Also, by shadowing the dentist, nurses, and secretaries I learned that teamwork and communication is essential in a practice. An
Today was a great day since I took and passed my competency on the Orban and EXD 11/12 explorers. Also, working with Danielle as my patient, helped me to have the experience of how to handle a patient with diabetes. At the same time, it helped me to realize that for patient with healthy gums I won’t be able to use the instrument to its full potential. In her case I could not get the Gracey 11/12 and 13/14 and 1/2 all the way to the interproximal space. I was deplaquing, and had to stay supragingival if the tissue was too tight. My challenges with these instruments, especially the Gracey 13/14 was adapting the instrument parallel to the tooth, so that the cutting edge was at 70 degrees angulation, and finding the right fulcrum for the maxillary
Since the day that Mrs. Noivi came in into our office, we have tried to please her the best way possible. Dr. Fink was the first dental provider who treated her on 10/28/2016, and he did all the professional procedures need it to finish with Mrs. Niovi’s Treatment. After her dentures were delivered Mrs. Niovi started to complain about the lower denture stating that it was a little bit uncomfortable to wear, so Dr. Fink did it once more. Without luck patient continue complaining about lower partial, we change her to a different provider, now her new Dr. is Dr. Vincent Marsh. He explained the same thing Dr. Fink did. She has a great amount of bone loss in the inferior arch, making it more difficult to accommodate any dental prostheses. A third
This experience has helped me a lot as a dental hygiene student. I learned a lot about this patient and his condition. In the future, I plan to educate my patients about the caries process to prevent anything like this to happen. Seeing my patient suffer like this at such a young age helped me understand the importance of oral hygiene care. Overall, this clinical experience stands out as significant because I learned a lot from this
As an Oral Health professionals (OHP) we should be able to analyse a critical incident with positive and negative feedback, in order to improve ourselves both professionally and personally (Mofidi, Strauss, Pitnet, & Sandler, 2003). On one particular day during the practice in the simulation (sim) clinic, I had accidently prep the cavity on the wrong teeth. The objectives for having daily practice in the sim clinic, was to allow learning experience from my mistakes and able to relate them into the actual scenario. It was the most influence experience to me and I was able to learn how to deal with situation straight away.
After disclosing my patient Omar, I took this opportunity to talk about biofilm and the importance of removing it with the proper brushing technique and flossing, and it effects on causing periodontal disease. He had an index plaque of 1 in all quadrants, so I recommended him to pay more attention to flossing and making sure he gets the floss under the gums and against the tooth. Since I did not have enough time I started debridement on the UR and LL quadrants with the cavitron and hand scaling. For his next visit, I plan on finishing the debridement in all four quadrants, polishing, and applying fluoride varnish. For my afternoon patient, I had Aurea Loubriel, a friend who is in the occupational therapy program at LCNE. She has a class at 3PM, so I only had time to fill out the legal forms, the medical and dental history, pharmacological data, habits, and vitals. For her, I had to send a fax with a form requesting her radiographs be sent to the clinic. For her next visit, I want to move on and collect all my assessment data, do her treatment plan and SOAP, and have everything check before she leaves. After my patient left, I had the change to assist Krenar with the suction while he was working
