Dental hygienists play an important role in the dental care facilities since they apply their knowledge on every case by removing tartar, stains, and plaque from teeth. They are in charge of applying sealants and fluorides to the teeth in order to protect them, they take and develop x-rays which helps them determine the patient 's vocal health and then present all this information through a report for the dentists to see. Once they have documented the patient 's care, they begin a treatment plan for each patient. They also educate their patients about the oral health and techniques they should apply and how to brush and floss the teeth accurately. Learning how to maintain good oral health is one of the key factors in successful oral care. Once the proper etiquette is learned, a person is on the next level to a clean and healthy smile! Today, dental hygienists require high training in order to properly use the right and equipment and skills to educate people about good dental hygiene.

The student must provide clinical dental hygiene services to patients with all classifications of periodontal disease for eight to twelve hours per week during freshman year and twelve to sixteen hours per week during sophomore year. While in the clinical setting, the student must show competence and include the process of care for the following patients: children, teens, adults, geriatrics and special needs. The competencies include the following: life-long education and knowledge of present research-based publishings, delivery of proper medical services in an emergency situation, ethical rationale and resolution, collecting and understanding patients’ overall health status, evaluating findings in order to incorporate ideal care plans, recognizing the level of success with the patient, and documenting all findings accurately. Being a dental hygienist comes with responsivities and challenges. A dentist and dental hygienist work together with patient’s oral health. All states have their own regulations for dental hygienists. Common tasks done by a dental hygienist are taking radiographs, removing calculus and plague, teaching patients how to take care of their teeth, lastly applying a sealant on teeth for future protection.

At the age of thirteen, I decided that I wanted to become a dentist. I have since read countless dental textbooks explaining everything from anatomy to treatment of oral diseases. My junior year of high school, I entered the Dental Assistant program at the Clark County Skills Center. Through the program I gained the knowledge needed to become a dental assistant. The Skills Center further strengthened my decision to become a dentist by teaching me how the dental world truly functions. In December of 2105, at the age of 16, I became a Certified Dental Assistant and began working at Design Dentistry. Working at Design Dentistry with Dr. Wenzinger has inspired me to continue my education, and I plan to further my education to become a dentist.

A dental hygienist must be licensed by the state that they practice, they must graduate from an accredited dental hygienist school and pass written and a clinical exam. A dental hygienist leads to a bachelor's degree, but an Associates is enough for practice in a private Doctors office.
