In this study, the retention phase was divided into four periods, and the dentists were asked to define the duration of each period in details, while using removable retainers. There were big differences in dentists' responses, because not all the dentists were following a four periods retention regimen. In addition, a high variety regarding the duration of retention phase was described, which was between 6 months and lifelong, as many dentists prefer to instruct their patients to wear the removable retainer permanently. In general, the median of the first period of retention was six months, in which the patients were asked to wear the retainer 13 hours per day, and seven days per week (Table 4.2). When fixed retainers were applied, the vast
A treatment plan is created and in the next visit, brackets are cemented to each tooth and linked with an arch wire. The patient returns monthly for retightening and adjustments. At the end of treatment, the brackets are removed and replaced with plastic retainers. Some of the reasons why orthodontists choose traditional braces over Invisalign are credibility, cost and low level of patient compliance.

If you have removable retainers, your orthodontist will instruct you on the amount of time that you’ll need to wear them. Generally, retainers are initially worn all the time, except for when you clean them or when you are eating. Your orthodontist will provide you with a personalized schedule for when you can alter the time required for wearing the retainer.
Very few people realize the importance of coming into Fairview Dental in Lewiston, ID, every six months to have their teeth cleaned and examined. It is something that dentists have encouraged for a very long time and that is for a good reason. Everyone knows what goes on when you are having your teeth cleaned, the hygienist is thoroughly cleaning and flossing your mouth. But, not many patients know what all is being checked for during a dental exam. There is a number of processes that Drs. Haas is checking for during a dental exam and when people are told what is being looked for they are more likely to come back to have it done every six months.
The career that I am currently interested in researching about is Dentistry, specifically the career path to become a general dentist. I am pursuing a bachelor of science in Kinesiology, with a minor in Biological Sciences. This combination of courses allows me to take the prerequisites required to apply to dental school. Before beginning the application process, I am required to take the Dental Admission Test, a timed multiple-choice exam conducted by the American Dental Association. I am currently in my junior year and will take the DAT in August of 2017. Performing well on the DAT is an important factor in the dental school application process and I plan to explore the most effective, cost efficient way to study for the test. I also plan to explore the gap year I will take before beginning dental school, along with the financial aspects of dental school and owning a general practice.
For removable braces, this ranges from 4-12 months, except for when used alongside fixed appliances, when they can be used for life in order to prevent the teeth from moving to their original positions to maintain symmetry. This results in regular appointments every 6-10 weeks. [5] In contrast, the treatment time for fixed braces much longer, ranging from 18- 24 months on average, although the orthodontic check- ups with the same intervals are advised. Therefore if the patient has a busy lifestyle (e.g. having a full- time job and being a parent), then this may prove difficult for the person to create time to maintain their oral health regarding braces in their daily
Removable retainers offer the potential for better oral hygiene, and patients are responsible for their wear. At least in the short - term, vacuum - formed retainers may be preferable to Hawley retainers as they are more cost - effective, preferred by patients, and more effective at reducing relapse in the lower arch. Vacuum - formed retainers or Hawley retainers can be worn on a part - time basis and do not require a period of full - time wear.
Some orthodontists prefer to use dual retention during the retention phase, in which the patient will be asked to wear a removable retainer in addition to the bonded fixed retainer, so that if the bonded retainer fails, the teeth can be held by the removable retainer (Johnston and Littlewood 2015) (Figure 2.5). Using a removable retainer alone or in conjunction with a fixed retainer can both retain the teeth in their position and reduce relapse, and no significant clinical differences are observed between the two retention methods, especially if the retention phase lasts for more than one year (Walker 2013).
Dentistry has a long and complex history, with the earliest evidence of it being performed being dated back to 7000 B.C. from the Indus River Valley Civilization. Later, an ancient Sumerian text mentioned “tooth worms” around 5000 B.C., and from 2900 - 2700 B.C,Egyptians began drilling teeth to drain abscesses. Etruscan and Greek physicians further progressed dentistry by pioneering dental prosthetics and writing texts that contained information about dentistry. The Roman Empire later conquered the Etruscans and absorbed some of their culture, including dentistry. In fact, the Roman medical writer Celsus wrote on many topics pertaining to dentistry. In Asia, although the Chinese did use silver amalgam fillings as early as 200 B.C., a proclamation from the Qu’ran that prohibited body mutilation prevented the advancement of dental surgery for many years. The first book to focus solely on dentistry, Little Medicinal Book for All Kinds of Diseases and Infirmities of the Teeth by Artzney Buchlein was published in Germany in 1530. Known European dental achievements were mostly French and English in the 16th and 17th century, with James Hunter, an English surgeon, pioneering the idea of teeth transplant. When the English began settling the United States, many of them brought along their dental practices. Notable American dentists during the colonial period include Isaac and John Greenwood and Paul Revere. In the 19th century, America was a hotbed for dentistry related

First of all, ensuring the effectiveness of direct retainer is key to increase effectiveness of indirect retention. There’s very high chance of total displacement of the denture instead of rotation if the rest and the direct retainer fail in maintaining the clasp assembly. In such cases, indirect retainer cannot prevent the denture from displacement (Carr, 2004). In other words, the indirect retainer becomes meaningless if the direct retainer loses its function. Another factor is the distance from the fulcrum line. It is clear that the performance of the indirect retainer increases with the increase in the distance between the fulcrum line and the point where the force is applied (Carr, 2004). There are some factors when evaluating the distance from the fulcrum line; length of the distal extension base, location of the fulcrum line, distance of the indirect retainer from the fulcrum line, rigidity of the connectors supporting indirect retainer and effectiveness of the supporting tooth (Owen, 2000). Finally, proper function of the indirect retainers is important. Since it moves the fulcrum line away from the point of application of the force, it counteracts the lifting force and stabilizes the
