I chose to write my paper over depression and the older adult. The reason I chose to write about this topic is because I think more attention should be brought to this mood disorder. Depression is more serious than some believe, and I would like to spread awareness about how this disorder affects the older adult. Another aspect that makes me want to research this topic is because I have experienced depression at one point in my life and I remember how hopeless I felt. I would like to learn about ways in which I can help others experiencing the hopelessness I once felt. What is depression? Depression is defined by a disorder that negatively affects the way one feels. These feelings can affect the way someone thinks, as well as how one acts to others. Often times older adults experience depression due to an array of issues. These issues may include the death of their spouse, death of loved ones, medical illnesses, financial instabilities, and so on. Symptoms in the older adult consist of sadness, fatigue, hopelessness, low self-esteem, suicidal tendencies, loss of interest in activities that were once enjoyable, and social isolation. Depression I feel is a disorder that gets overlooked in older adults as well as all age groups. Some individuals may feel depression is not actually a medical condition, but that is not the case.
