Depression is a mood disorder which prevents individuals from leading a normal life, at work socially or within their family. Depression also known as Major Depressive Disorder (MMD) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act, but it’s mental disorder is characterized by a pervasive and persistent low mood that is accompanied by low self-esteem and by a loss of interest or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities. Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults in any given year. And one in six people will experience depression at some time in their life. Dysthymia may also be related to substance use. People with this type of chronic depression may abuse drugs or alcohol in trying to relieve their hopelessness and other unpleasant symptoms. Dysthymia in children may sometimes be related to anxiety disorders, learning disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), conduct disorder, and mental retardation. Personal factors, such as complicated life situations, a tragic family history, childhood traumas, living in stressful environments for a long time, and other similar life circumstances can lead to depressive conditions. Feldman 2E (2013) mentions that an assessment test for depression called PHQ-9 was created to help create a general sense of degree of depression a person was experiencing. The questions were based on your average mood in the last two weeks on how often you been bothered by a certain problem.
