The mental health problem that will be discussed throughout the essay is depression. The chosen treatment that will be examined is, antidepressant treatment, by taking in to account the issues associated with this particular treatment.
Additionally, the essay will deliver an understanding of mental health and illness by focusing on the underlying perspectives (biomedical). According to Reynolds et al. (2009, p. 8) “compared with other areas of health practice, the mental health field is particularly subjected to heated debate”. Therefore, the essay will attempt to look at the contemporary issues within mental health care by drawing on relevant research.
There are various theories and understandings given to the term ‘mental health’. A previous understanding given by the Health Education Authority (1997, in Tilford and Cattan, 2006 p. 17) defined mental health as “the emotional and spiritual pliability which allows us to enjoy life and to survive pain, disappointment and sadness. It is a positive sense of well being and an underlying belief in our own, and others’, dignity and worth”.
