Depression in Our Youth

Many teenagers and adolescents experience major depression in America today. True depression is the effect of a chemical imbalance in the brain that cannot be helped. It can also be caused by a certain traumatic event or a bunch of smaller negative events. The third leading cause of death with teenagers is suicide, caused from major depression. Teenagers suffer from depression for various reasons; including difficulties in school, peer-pressure, troubles with their home life, or relationship issues. There are everyday things and activities that can also worsen depression such as stress, sleep, food, media or simply being around the wrong individuals.
Like many illnesses, depression can be presented in multiple forms. There are various types of depression branching from major all the way to manic. The three main types of depression are Major Depressive Disorder, Dysthymia and Bipolar Disorder. Although these are just three out of the countless types, there are still variations on severity, symptoms and duration. Depressive disorder is an illness that involves the body, mood and thoughts. Depression interferes with a persons’ daily life, functioning, and causes pain for not only the person with the disorder but also those secondarily involved such as family and friends.
Once a person has been diagnosed as depressed, it is said that they will become depressed again within only a few years of your first episode. Adults and primary care givers are trying extremely hard to reach
