Most forms of Catholic Baroque art are assertive and, as intended, assault ones senses. The evolution of religious art from the uniform composition characteristic of the Italian Renaissance through the evolving Mannerism in to the bold and striking Baroque was striking to say the least. The work of art that I have chosen to write about, is the Three Miracles of Saint Zenobius (1500-10). This painting is part of a bigger collection that depicts scenes from the life of Saint Zenobius. It’s sister pieces are spread out in different parts of the world, such places as, London, Dresden and New York itself. The painter of this entire collection is Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) and he belongs to the Early part of the Renaissance. It is worth to note, that Botticelli was taught by Filippo Lippi. Fra Filippo Lippi was a prominent artist of his time and he painted his work with great color and as well with a narrative quality. Botticelli himself made a name for himself by his artistic style and to his contribution to painting the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel and even though his most notable work of art was the Birth of Venus that was created eighteen years prior to the Three Miracles, this piece of work takes a different approach than his other paintings. The painting itself resembles the Scenes from the life of Saint John the Baptist (1490/95) and it could be said that Botticelli was inspired by it.
The Last Supper by Leonardo is very different to Tintoretto’s representation of the same incident. The last supper is one of the most important occurrences which took place in the Christian religion such an important event that many have seen the need for the event visually recorded through art the two most famous of these representations are by far Tintoretto’s and Leonardo’s works. The Last Supper by Leonardo was created during the renaissance period and is a simple symbolic work with little emotion. Tintoretto however chose to represent the event in a surrealistic manner to give full impact; A way in which was typical of the art period in which he painted the work, the
Tintoretto’s Last Supper has a very similar symmetrical composition to Leonardo da Vinci’s painting of the same subject.
Man has been creating art for over 30,000 years. There are cave drawings, sculptures, Egyptian art, Greek Art, Modern Art and plenty more but to many, the Renaissance Art period is considered to be most important. Never had so many geniuses in art lived at one time and never had so many pieces of cherished art been produced. Two examples of Renaissance paintings are Cigoli’s Adoration of the Shepherds and Moretto da Brescia’s Entombment. Both paintings posses the attributes that were popular during the Renaissance period which I will now contrast and compare.
The art that impressed me in the Getty Center is “Holy Family with Saints Anne, Catherine of Alexandria and Mary Magdalene” by Nosadella (Giovanni Francesco Bezzi).When I entered the room of this art, this is the first artwork attracted towards itself, probably the reason I went to Venetian art with big expectation of it will be beautiful among all Italian ones. The vibrant colors and contorted poses make this painting more vivacious. The sitting figures are from left is Virgin Mary holds infant Christ, Catherine of Alexandria and Mary Magdalene. The standing figures are Saint Anne and Joseph. On the right upper corner, two unknown baby angels are enjoying the scene of adoration below. All the characters are drawn like a pyramidal shape on left to give space so that angels can fly in the upper right in a distance from the main scene. The painting has mostly made of basic colors such as blue, yellow and red and those are plain colors. It doesn’t have much elaborate work on trying different colors or trying fine textile work, but giving different shades of same color adds more look. This painting great for distant admiration .Since the painting is oil on panel, applying paints on different layers is possible until getting the desired color. This painting technique gives artist more flexibility unlike fresco, which has time limit to apply paint and hard to correct the mistakes. Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” was painted during his time in Milan, which was from about 1495 to 1498. “The Last Supper” is a tempera and oil mural on plaster. He created this painting for the refectory of the city’s Monastery of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Also known as “The Cenacle,” this painting is about fifteen by twenty nine feet and is the artist’s only surviving fresco. The painting depicts the Passover dinner, in which Jesus Christ addresses the Apostles and says, “One of you shall betray me.” One of the painting’s most vivid features in the painting is each Apostle’s distinct emotive expression and body language. When the French in 1499 (invaded Milan) and the Sforza family fled, da Vinci also escaped. He was possibly the first to Venice and then to Florence.
The second piece of art is called: “Wounds of Existence.” This seems to be a painting on a unusually rugged surface made out of un-sanded wooden planks. It depicts what seems like, a man and a women with their faces close to each other with sad faces. The subject matter of this piece seem to be mellow and sad. I picked this piece because it jumped out at me at how absolutely unique it was, being painted on wooden planks.
The art piece that I selected for my analysis is called The Triumph of Divine Love by Peter Paul Rubens. The artwork is an oil painting on canvas, circa 1625. This piece of art was commission by Isabella Clara Eugenia, Infanta of Spain and Portugal. The Triumph of Divine Love was one of eleven art pieces in a series portraying the Eucharist cycle, an important issue in the Catholic-Protestant strife. Its purpose was to aid in the Catholic Reformation and the artwork was to be displayed at the Convento de las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. (Ringling Museum n.d.)
The Last supper represents the first celebration of this sacrifice that is now a key part to every mass. That is why it was so important to show Jesus twice in these paintings.

The Purpose of the paintings of the “Last Supper,” by Ugolino di Nerio and Leonardo da Vinci, were to portray the betrayal of Jesus Christ by of one the twelve apostles, as they are having the last meal. Jesus Christ mentions to his apostles that there is going to be a betrayal amongst them. All twelve apostles had mixed feelings of anger, fear, and surprised. Later on, it turns out that Judas, one of the twelve apostles, had told the authorities about Jesus so he can be arrested then later crucified. The paintings show a dramatic scene after the claim by Jesus Christ. The paintings give us insight to get the reader interested in the painting of “The Last Supper,” how the cultures that produced those paintings change the way we paint today, and how both paintings influenced the Renaissance era.
Portraits of the Madonna and Child depicting Mary holding the infant Christ provide a recurrent image in art throughout the ages. In prevalent portrayals over the span of centuries, artists reflect a wide diversity in their representations of the iconic duo. In particular, two works found in the National Gallery of Ireland in the early Italian Renaissance gallery, The Virgin and Child, Saint John the Baptist and Prophets by an unknown artist (1325-1450) and The Virgin and Child by Paolo Uccello (1435-1440), highlight the transition between Byzantine and early Renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child, particularly in relation to subject matter, composition, material, style and meaning. Although each of these paintings of the Madonna and Child depicts the same Christian iconography of Mary and Jesus, their differences in composition and style influence their meaning, with each painting reflecting the individual artist who painted it and the different time period during which it was created.
I have been greatly impacted by all of the artists, styles, and types of art we have talked about so far in Art History I. We have looked at sculptors, paintings, architecture, and prints with varying styles, from a numerous amount of artists. While I am intrigued by mostly all of what we have studied, The Last Supper paintings catch my eye the most. Many artists have successfully completed paintings of The Last Supper including, Tintoretto, Paolo Veronese, and Leonardo da Vinci; however, da Vinci was the first, original painter of The Last Supper. My favorite Last Supper painting definitely has to be the one by Tintoretto. Tintoretto’s Last Supper painting truly represents various key aspects of art; from the usage of colors and shadows, all the way to the numerous groups of people taking on various different tasks.
Gorgeously. Striking. Grace. The golden painting is taking up by the two most iconic symbols of Christianity: Jesus Christ and Virgin Mary. Christ gently placing a golden grown on the inclined head of the Virgin Mary, who is sitting on the right side of Jesus; her hands crossed over her chest symbolist of humble, reverent and loyalty. This position was purposely set by Fabriano. In Christianity art, position is significant in dividing between good manners and malefactors.
