One of the goals of Healthy People 2020 is to reduce the suicide rate in the U.S. which is currently one of the top 10 causes of death. It is clearly in issue and vital to address this issue because these rates have had a steady incline from 1999-2014. This had led to an age-related suicide rate of 24% because it has gone from 10.5 to 13.0 deaths per 100,000. Public health can be explained as the desire to do what is deemed necessary to keep society as a whole in a healthy state, by eliminating possible causes that may be leading to detrimental outcomes in the health of our nation. It is the research of cures, immunizations, quarantining, and raising public awareness in an effort to stop the spread of disease among the community. However, there is a large amount of gray area when it comes to what is right and wrong in terms of placing the health of the nation as a whole over the health
