1. Describe your interest or motivation in pursuing your major. (300-word limit)
As someone who had always been prudent, I wanted a major that involved risk, and the out-of-the-box thinking I enjoyed. To me, business was all of the aforementioned. Who would’ve thought selling something like “pet” rocks could make someone a millionaire? Looking to an even more ludacris invention, who would’ve thought that selling a singing plastic fish would go viral. Herein lied what I thought to be the “magic” of business and entrepreneurship – the fact that it wasn’t a prescribed path but one that I could pave for myself.
From a young age I saw how the need for business knowledge was ubiquitous in almost every field. However, this became particularly apparent to me when organizing my debate team summer camp fundraiser. As president of the club, I had made it my mission to make this fundraiser, which was essentially run as a small business, a great success. I learned management tactics and conflict resolution through working with my team. Additionally, I became acquainted with facets of business like

What do you anticipate will be your greatest challenge at Cal Poly? (300-word limit)
I believe one of my biggest challenges will be allocating my time efficiently between school-work and extracurricular opportunities. As someone who was pretty focused on purely academic interest throughout high school, I definitely plan on exploring some more recreational hobbies whether it may be intramural sports, music, or various other activities. I look to college as an opportunity to branch out further. In exploring all these activities I hope to find my niche and a group I fit in with. However, this is where the allocation of time becomes crucial as I wouldn’t want it to affect school work. Albeit it is slightly intimidating that the margin for error, compared to in high school, has diminished, I hope to be able to manage the various aspects of college life and yet still find my
The initial shock of the significant workload and expectations can take their toll, but good time management skills can prevent multiple late nights in a row to get assignments done on time. Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. Lucier’s fourth and final step is to not be afraid to seek help with your time management, she states: “The most important thing to have for time
I helped the students at Junior Achievement's Biztown Education to learn how run a business (SeaWorld), compute the business finance and keep track of their expenses, and market for their business. The following are some of the activities: apply for a bank loan, employee payroll, keep track of business balance account, write checks, pay expense, deliver a great customer service, and advertising.
I’m proud of my accomplishments thus far in my academic career as a result of making the right decisions in the challenging courses I take that have all been possible through organization and paying attention to my teachers. Through cross country and track, I’ve been able to meet amazing people who share the passion of running and are focused on making the best future for themselves. I’ve benefitted from being a self-motivated student to continue working hard in and out of the classroom. An essential skill I learned was how to manage my time better. As I continue to add activities to my schedule, I use a planner to make sure I am dividing my time evenly to academics and
I feel that in college, a student should not only focus on their academics, but find a healthy balance of school work, athletics,
As an athlete in high school, time management is needed to complete everything on your agenda even with extra-curricular activities in the way. Living overseas, I had the privilege to travel to other countries for athletic events. These events could last a weekend or even a whole week and work will gradually pile up. If we didn’t have it or it was incomplete it will result in a zero without a chance of making the assignment up. In college, I occasionally make time for fun and activities outside of my education. There are several distractions from friends, athletics, to even leisure time that may get in the way from my school work. My education is mandatory and my priority!
Up until recently, I was like many of my peers, uncertain about what the future would hold for me. I did not know where exactly I wanted to attend school, what I wanted to study, or what I wanted to do career-wise. But, after taking high school classes like Business Information Management, Human Resources, Banking and Financial Services, and Accounting I, I found my long awaited answer, a fascination in the business and financial world. I loved attending these classes and learning new and exciting
College students generally engage in multiple activities outside of the school. Student take a class at one time. However, also they have to juggle extracurricular activities, particularly, volunteer work, jobs, and family responsibilities. College student have to figuring out how to manage multiple coincident responsibilities. How can be more efficiency?
My grades both freshman and sophomore year have generally been high, so I don’t foresee the balance with academics becoming too much of an issue. While I participate in some minor extracurriculars outside of speech and debate, such as golf and piano, neither are a significant time commitment. I’ve more or less sold my soul to speech and debate – it’s by far the activity that I spend the most time on. However, if time management becomes an issue, I’ll prioritize the speech and debate work that will ultimately reap the most benefits. For example, instead of cutting a massive amount of evidence that we’ll never use for our slow aff, I’ll spend the time listening to others or spending a couple hours working out particular phrasing and a solid
A way that I find a balance between my college life and my personal life is to have a day planner , a schedule, or a to-do list, that way I know what has to be done first and what can wait to be done. When planning my life I know when I have the free time to do what I want. For instance, in Grant Berry’s A Change of Attitude, Grant did not find a good balance between his school work and his personal life. He was consumed by his school work, there was no extra time to spend with his family. Grant believed that the sacrifice was necessary to succeed in college, even though he didn’t like making those sacrifices.
I have always been interested in “doing my own thing” or, better known as, entrepreneurship. In high school, I would buy T-shirts, sweatshirts, and hats in bulk. I’d embroider little emblems on them and mark up the price by 100%. People at school would buy $1 shirts and pay $9 for my craftsmanship. However, I wanted bigger and better things. I channeled Andrew Carnegie in my approach to business: why just stop at my little venture when I could vertically integrate and market for myself? I decided to invest all my money in a new cause and thus, my own social media marketing company was born. The skills I’ve learned in starting my company is something that cannot be taught. I would relish the opportunity to grow and learn at an institution like The Stephen M. Ross School of Business that understands the importance of innovation and exploration.
What motivates me most to pursue a college degree is opening new doors for career options and inspiring my daughter through my own actions to pursue lifelong learning. I have waited until this point in my life to take this first step for many reasons. I feel that I had a lot of fear of failure that kept me from pursuing this higher learning. I am in the right place mentally at this stage in my life and feel like I can fully invest in this experience and make it truly a success and representation of what I can do. I am also highly motivated by the fact that my career is truly stalled because I am not competition for someone that has equal experience and a degree. I plan to conquer that competition through this process.

To add to my skills in art, I have also pursued a business path by minoring in entrepreneurship and taking part the Summer Management Program at Wake Forest. Minoring in Entrepreneurship has opened my eyes to ways in which I can channel my artistic abilities in creative and innovative ways in a business related field. By participating in these business courses, I have fused my interests in the arts with my desire to take on a leadership role in the business
Business Studies is an important course that prepares students to face the real practice of commerce.
