Child Development
For this unit you will need to be able to describe the expected pattern of development of children and young people from birth to 19 years.
In groups you must complete the attached table to address 2.1: 1.1 and 1.2
2.1: 1.1 Describe the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19.

It is possible for both sexes to have a growth spurt at this time. | Young people will usually now have a clear idea about their favourite subjects and will usually be more motivated in these areas. They will be reflecting on their experiences and choosing their pathways. They may lack confidence in less popular subjects, to the extent they may be truant. It is particularly important for young people to feel good about themselves and want to belong. | At this age, children’s self esteem can be very vulnerable. They will be entering adulthood however they still need a lot of guidance in many different ways.. They will want to be more independent and start to spend more time with their friends without adults, but continue to display childish behaviour. They will find that they are under the pressures of growing up and increasing expectations, and may be unsure on how to behave. | 16-19 years | This is the stage where young people become young adults, and are often at the peak of their physical performance. Almost all girls will have reached physical maturity, boys will continue to mature into their mid-20 's. | By the time they have left school they will be thinking about their pathway for their career, whether it involves college or university. | Young people enter adulthood but still require advise and guidance from adults. They will lack experience and individuals will vary in emotional maturity and the way
The expected pattern starts at 0-3 years where a child is expected to develop the most. They have little control over their bodies at 0-1 years and are dependent on their natural instincts eg: sucking, grasping.
• Include a brief description of the physical, cultural and cognitive processes, and social and emotional development at each stage.
Describe the expected pattern of children and young people’s development from birth to 19 years, to include:
2.1 Explain how children and young people’s development is influenced by a range of personal factors
All children and young people develop at different rates, but the order which they advance in differs very little. Children’s development tends to progress from head to toe, inner to outer, from simple to complex and from general to specific.
The expected pattern starts at 0-3 years where a child is expected to develop the most. They have little control over their bodies at 0-1 years and are dependent on their natural instincts e.g. sucking, grasping but when the child has more control over their body they will start to crawl and eventually progress to walking. By the age of 3 as well as
Learning Outcome: Understand the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth - 19 years.
Explain the reasons why children and young people's development may not follow the expected pattern
The guide below explains what you might expect from the development of the child through various ages:
The word development refers not to the physical growth of children and young people, but to the skills and knowledge that they are developing. When looking at child development it is divided into the following areas –
From 9 months – 3 years babies will learn to walk, run, jump and hop using their gross motor skills. They have more control over their movements allowing them to point, hold small objects using the fine pincer grasp and gain more independence in toilet training.
E1-Describe the development of children in a selected age range and in two areas of development
Understand the expected pattern of development for children and young people from birth to 19 years
Studies show adolescents age ranges from 12-19; transitioning from middle age and before adulthood (psychologytoday.com). The transitional period difficult for some. For instance, independence and self-identity, schoolwork, sexuality, drugs, alcohol, and social life. During adolescence years, the brain hasn't developed fully. Different hormones produced and the body begins to change. Throughout many changes, they move into physical, mental maturity, and different emotions (Cromer, 2011). Changes like this are considered normal. However, when there is trauma, divorce, and abuse brain development changes (Cromer, 2011).
In adolescence (12-20) there is still motor coordination developing. Rapid height and weight changes will occur. Wisdom teeth and secondary sexual characteristics form and come about. During these ages there will be emotional milestones as well including school, puberty, relationships, etc that begin to affect them.
