Description.
Mesoenvironment or competitive environment basically decides the competitive situation of the industry of which your organization forms part of. This includes all the organizations involved from production to consumption. All these organizations form part of supply chain management, which include original producers, intermediaries, semi-manufactured products makers or spares producers, producers of end products, distribution channels, transporters, warehouses, cold storages, and consumers. If any of these organizations fail to do their part it will weaken the entire supply chain management. However Mesoenvironment can be best understood through “Porter’s Five Forces Industry Analysis”. Competitors can be classified into four types:
• Brand Competitors: Marketing products with similar features and benefits to the same customers at similar prices.
• Product Competitors: Compete in the same product class but market products with different features, benefits, and prices.
• Generic competitors: Provide different products that solve the same problem or satisfy the same basic customer need.

Porter’s Five Forces Industry Analysis:

However the fact that there is no competition and that the magazine is doing so well creates an opening for new entrants.

•Monopolistic competition- When an industry contains many rival firms, each of which has a comparable but at least slightly different product. Restaurants, are an example, all serve food but of different types of food and in different sites. Manufacture costs are above what could be attained if firms sold equal products, but consumers have an advantage from the variety.
Competitive rivalry exists between companies with the same or similar products/services and similar markets. Factors to be considered include:
Within these categories, many sub-markets branch out. Competitive Markers are the most common, having many sellers providing similar products to many buyers. Competitive businesses make profit based off of the relationship between net and gross income, and depend on providing a more reasonable price than its competitor. This type of market is seen mainly with a capitalist economy. Monopolistic Markets are similar to Competitive, but they differ in the type of product. Monopolistic businesses provide differing items that all provide a common service. A Monopolistic business gains profit by providing a product that the same basic service as another business, but differs in small details that contour to different types of buyers. The auto industry, proving scooters, motorcycles, automobiles, and other forms of differing transportation is an example.

➢ Product differentiation - Products that are relatively the same will compete based on price. Brand identification can reduce rivalry.
The generic strategy allows the firm to react to the five forces better than their competitors (Worthington & Britton, 2006). According to Porter (1985), an organization can enjoy competitive advantage by focusing on the generic competitive strategies. The organization could enjoy competitive edge by either offering the product at low cost or differentiating the product from the competitors or by focusing on a specific market. Porter (1985) emphasized that the generic strategies should be at the centre of the strategic plans.
