Fun and Responsibility. There is a true difference between reading a sign and understanding; one can articulate words, but without understand it, this sign board had no meaning. My understanding of the nature of risk and the very personal nature of teaching and learning emanates from my construction of that memory.
Fourteen of my friends, of computer science students of our College, including one of friend’s twin sister, drowned when they ventured into a treacherous sea off the Murud beach ignoring warnings during our excursion. I was one of the six who was rescued by the fishermen. These kind fishermen also assisted the coast guard in recovering the bodies of the other victims. As my friends were described in the news. In all we were twenty four students who had gone with our teacher three other staff members of our college in a private bus for the picnic at Murud, about 44 km from Alibaug town in Raigad district near Mumbai. Now being carried back in ambulance.
The day was warm and muggy; it was the perfect weather to go to the beach. In here it is always sultry in summer or in winter. Murud is a lovely beach that stretches miles along the blue Arabian Sea. The water was clear and a rich deep blue in color. Not a patch of sea weed in sight. The fine sand burning feet as I hear the sound of the waves crashing and the cool sea breeze brushing by.
We all noticed the warning signboards at the beach, which has been put up recently, since there have been few drownings…
