What is a URL?
A URL (Uniform Resource Locator) provides a way to locate a resource on the web which is the hypertext system that operates on the internet. A URL which is informally termed a web address is a reference to a web resource that specifies its position on a computer network and algorithm for retrieving it. The URL contains the name of the protocol used to access the resource and resource name. Part 1 of a URL identifies what protocol to use. Part 2 identifies the domain name or IP address from its location.
URL protocols include HTTPS (HTTP Secure) and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) for internet resources, "FTP" for File Transfer Protocol server and "mail to" for email addresses.
URL is mainly used to path to a website, a component or a program on a website. Mainly the resource name consists of:
• A domain name identifying web service or a server.
• A path or program name to the file on the server.
• Network port to use in making the connection
For example, specifies that:
• Resource should be retrieved using the HTTP protocol (which powers the web) through a web browser.
• The resource is reached through the domain name, which can be a single or cluster of servers.
• The path to the specific resource is /definition/web-address.html.
