The elk enjoyed being in the middle of the field. He enjoyed the smell of the wet grass, He often ran around the field and toss himself on the wet grass in hot days. The elk would cross a busy street just to walk across toward the wet grass. One snowy day the elk went where he would normally go every day and noticed a white pile of something he was confused of the white pile of something. The street was less busy so he went to investigate the white pile, where the wet grass would be at. When the elk realized that the grass was gone he got a bit gloomy and depress, he tossed himself on the white pile and got bored. He started to play with the snow and got satisfied. He stood up in glee and played with white pile of snow. The elk was no longer
Humans often find bliss in nature, as it can be a place of comfort for many. On the other hand, nature is also a place where we go to test our strength, and learn life lessons. By getting out there and letting the trials of mother nature challenge us, valuable encounters and experiences build our character in a positive way. Humans crave adventure. With nature’s resources, the glorified idea of adventure becomes a reality.
At the beginning of Black Elk Speaks, Black Elk and John Neihardt smoke the peace pipe then Black Elk begins his story. When Black Elk was still pretty young he and his tribe were involved in the Hundred slain war, and Black Elk also begins to hear strange voices. Later on Black Elk falls very ill, then two warriors come from the sky and bring Black Elk to the Flaming rainbow tepee, while he was there his six grandfathers gave him six very special gifts. After Black Elk got the gifts he was taught the horse dance, when Black Elk returned from his vision he went to see his cousin Crazy horse, later on Crazy Horse would be murdered by being stabbed in the back by a soldier. By this time most of the indians were forced to live on the reservations but one band of Lakotas escaped from the reservation and traveled north to Canada where Sitting Bull’s band was. The winters in Canada were too harsh for the Sioux so they reluctantly moved back to the reservation where they were given hardly anything. With Black Elk’s people losing hope he teaches them the dances he learned in his visions. When Black Elk learns of Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show he decides to go with him, after a few months doing shows in America Black Elk went to England. When the Lakotas were camped on Wounded Knee Creek, the wasichus came and murdered everyone in the camp including the women and children. After the battle the remaining Lakota surrendered they went to the reservation and the flowering tree dies. The
Banner Elk, North Carolina, is not only nestled in the heart of the Appalachian mountains, but has been implanted into my heart and soul from an early age. From the surface, it is home to a little over 1,000 people, a small college, and a couple ski resorts, but to me it has much more to offer. A plethora of memories originate from experiences I have had there, which have cumulatively molded me into the young man I betray today.
Lane Spotted Elk is a Montana State University student from the tribe Northern Cheyenne/Crow. Lane has a strong social side of the health triangle. He worked at the Boys and Girls club which made a big impact in his life. OPI Honor Yourself Poster Series states that “‘I was at the point...I needed something bigger than myself.” So lane turned to the Boys and Girls club…” This quote shows that Lane had the ability to ask for help which is part of the health triangles social side. He actually took advice from other people, in his case the Boys and Girls club. “Lane...was nominated as a representative… and was named as the representative from Montana…” (OPI Honor Yourself Poster Series) This evidence makes it clear that Lane's Social side is strong,
At age 17, a muzzle loader elk hunt in Nevada was one of the coolest things that could have ever happened to me. And a muzzleloader tag for the Jarbidge Wilderness Area 072 was one of the most awesome places for it to happen.
The Elk Mound Football team may have had a rough start to the season, but if you look at the spot they are sitting now you might have thought the beginning games were played by a different team. The Mounders are 5-0 in conference games and 6-2 overall. This week they face the undefeated Spring Valley Cardinals. This means that both of these teams will be playing for the Dunn- St. Croix Conference Championship.
Occasionally the circumstance of death prevented the recovery of a clan-member’s body and caused acute grief for their family. Buffalo Bird Woman recounted the apparent death of a Hidatsa woman, Lies On Red Hill, and the grief of her father. During the spring buffalo hunt, the ice pack on the Missouri River began to flow separating Lies On Red Hill, who was traveling via bullboat, from her husband Short Bull, who led their horses on shore. When Short Bull saw the ice and the rapids on the river, he believed his wife drowned. He continued to Like-A-Fish-Hook Village and told Lies On Red Hill’s family about the accident. Her father, Dries Squash, was overcome by his grief and he went into her lodge. He placed her squash basket on his back and walked through the village weeping and mourning saying, “Lies On Red Hill, dear daughter, I shall never see you
Today I am going to talk about the white tailed deer and coyote population across South Carolina. As you can imagine the white-tailed deer population has decreased and the coyote population has increased. I think that one day the white-tailed deer will be an almost extinct species and the coyote will end up being a species that is overpowering the United States of America. This is important because if the coyote do come overpowering, then mankind population will start decreasing and only people in bomb shelters will survive but only for a few years.
A little background I found on the author, John G. Neihardt, was that when he was little he moved around in the west a lot. While he was travelling in the west, after meeting his wife, he ran into Nicholas Black Elk, the Ogalala holy man, and would bring his visions to the world. The original book was published in 1932, and sold millions all over the world. The idea of the book was to recognize that not all Native Americans are going to kill you, and that it could introduce the idea of dreams with perceptive understandings. Standing Bear was in the room where the writing was taking place as a witness to tell that everything was true. While Neihardt was writing the book him and Black Elk became incredible friends and their friendship lasted
As we were following a well traveled game trail, we came to a spot where we could see the rim of the canyon through the opening in the trees. As we looked up to the top of the canyon, we noticed there was a bull elk at the top of the canyon. It looked like a postcard. The elk was standing on the very top of the hill with nothing around it but the green grass and the tall trees in the background. He was looking straight down at as, and didn?t even care that we were there.
The story of Nicholas Black Elk was one that was reluctantly told, a Lakota medicine man, a visionary of his own sort. Written by John G. Neihardt, Black Elk Speaks captures the essence of what the Lakota culture based its teachings off of, as well as exhibiting who Black Elk really was. When Neihardt began his dialogues with Black Elk he knew which questions to ask, his plan was clear from the beginning. There were choices made by Neihardt that seem controversial, such as why he decided to end his book at the Battle of Wounded Knee instead of continuing through Black Elk’s life and his conversion to Catholicism. The steps taken by Neihardt succeeded in portraying Black Elk’s own story, and the importance of his vision on his life.
The elk (Cervus canadensis) is one of the largest species of the Cervidae family in the world, and one of the largest land mammals in North America. Early European explorers in North America, who were familiar with the smaller red deer of Europe, thought the larger North American animal resembled a moose, and consequently gave it the name elk, which is the common European name for moose (Wikipedia 2014).
Peter wakes up one winter day, looks out the window, and discovers that everything is covered in snow. Excited about what he sees, he puts on his red snowsuit and runs outside to explore. He plays making different footprints, joins other boys in a snowball fight, makes a smiling snowman and some snow angels, and climbs up a mountain to slide all the way down. He has so much fun and likes the snow so much that he makes a snowball and puts it in his pocket for the next day. When he gets home, he tells his mom all about his adventures in the snow. After taking a hot bath and get ready for bed, Peter looks in his pocket searching for the snowball he kept there. When he finds out that the snowball isn't there he feels very sad. That night, he dreams that the sun comes up and melts all the snow away. However, when he wakes up he cheers up when he sees that the snow is still there. He calls on a friend and sets out to another great day in the snow.
It was a cold day, so cold that your arms start to sting as if a needle is impaling the surface of your skin. The wind applies a force which feels as if your face is oozing with thick crimson red blood. The gray puffy clouds covered the sky and dropped small snowflakes onto the road’s surface. A man stood there, freezing, clearing the coat of thick white snow from the concrete road. His nose runs with a river of snot that floods out when the cold wind strikes. His sense of smell is heavily clogged by the slimy snot, but he can still smell the scent of the steamy hot chocolate which sits on the top of his snow covered car. His feet start to numb because of the cold flood which soaks through his boots to his white, silky socks. His feet feel as if he stepped into the freezing cold ocean. As if he fell through ice and he was stuck standing there. The vast pile of the ice white snow feels almost like a quicksand around his black rubber boot. Foggy figures of people shovel the big piles of snow off the sidewalks. They scrape and pick at the glossy white ice which sticks to the sidewalk like a little boy clinging to his mother's side. His feet still sting as if he was stepping on pins and needles. His hands are damp with sweat from grasping the curved metal shaft attached to a socket which holds the blade. The blade cuts holes into the thick powdered snow which is removed from the endless pile. The jet black shovel is filled with slushy snow and crystal shards of ice. The end of
“Avalanche Take Cover!” One day a girl and her friend had a tragic event that they would never forget. On a foggy wet winter day. It was dark and the wind would give you chills up your back. I was at my friends house for the night, and the wind was howling like wolves calling for their pack. I heard the back door open and I woke up my friend Elizabeth. Next we went down stairs feeling scared and anxious because we had no clue what was coming next. Then we saw a note. I picked it up and I started to read it. It said, “If you ever want to see your mom and step dad again you will come meet me up on the cliff and trade something of their worth”, We both had tears in our eyes. I gathered my strength and I said, “ What do we do?” “Do we call the police?” Elizabeth said,“No you know what the note said, we have to climb the cliff and bring something of their worth.” “If we call the police he might kill or hurt them.”
