Fundamentally, there are two ways of creating this general image. One is to describe the general appearance of the device; the other is to compare it with something that is familiar to the reader. You must be careful, of course, not to compare an unfamiliar thing with another unfamiliar thing. Reference to the Score-Keeper again suggests how illuminating a good analogy can be: “To this comparison might be added some such direct description as the following: “ It consists of a mechanism enclosed in a rectangular metal case --- 1 5/16 in. long (3.3 cm), 7/8 in wide (2.2cm), and ¼ in. thick (0.6 cm)--- to which is attached a leather wristband.” Size and shape are often the conspicuous characteristics of a mechanism.

Organization of the Description

It is possible to divide almost every mechanism into parts. Such division is an essential part of a detailed description. In the introduction to a description, a statement of the principal parts into which the mechanism can be divided serves two purposes: the first is that it is an additional way, and an important one, of giving the reader a general understanding of what the mechanism is. The second purpose is to describe the principal parts one at a time, a list of principal parts in the order in which you wish to discuss them is a clear indication of the organization of the remainder of the description.
