The Stray
The night before the first day of school, my mama gave me my first house key.
“After school, you head straight to the house.” My mother said “Yes Ma’am,” I replied.
“Be sure to call when you get inside; and lock the door behind you.” She lectured. Once seated at the dinner table, we rhapsodized about the morning to come. “Chassy get up, it’s time for school,” my mother gingerly said as she tenderly shook me by my shoulders. Drowsily, I rubbed my eyes and made my way to the bathroom. Briskly I showered, brushed my hair and teeth, and then got dressed for school. I took hold of my books and my key then was out the door. After I walked outside, I noticed there was a cat perched in the fork in our pecan tree curiously, I walked over to the cat and held out my hand. Within a few seconds his soft fur rubbed against my palm. Just as the cat adapted to my gentle touch, my mom called out “Chasten, don’t pet that cat or he won’t go away!” My mom exclaimed. I raced to the car and was perplexed as to why my mom didn’t want the cat to stay around. As Mr. Sonny dropped me off at home every day, I would give the stray a piece of turkey meat before momma got home from work. One day as she pulled into the drive, she walked into the house and as she put her stuff down, she would question “Why is that dang cat still here?” I would often reply “I don’t know, Mama.” As the days went on, the cat, Yi-yo, and I grew closer. It seemed as if Yi-yo trusted me more as I trusted
