Growing up in an area with a large Mexican community I never really understood how much my culture means to me. I grew up with the stories my dad and grandfather would tell me about my ancestors. My people were the raiders from the hills of Mexico City and that we were a family of warriors. I never held much weight to the warrior part of my grandfather’s stories but I did know that my great grandfather was a fighter. He left Mexico and rode the train up to Denton Texas and sold tamales on the square his entire life. He fought to give my grandfather a better life here. I don’t talk about my dad’s side of the family much, in this day in age being seen as white has more advantages than being seen as Mexican. This thought changed as I came to
El Paso has many enjoyable adventures. Pamela Porter quotes Mike Episcopo saying, “You've got 2 million peopl in the El Paso-Juarez area, but when you get up in the canyons, it's like you'r in the middle of nowhere” (qtd. in Porter 1). To some, being in the middle of nowhere might sound like a bore, but to most, this is a perfect getaway. El Paso has many hiking trails, biking trails, museums, and more: a great reason for anyone to escape from today’s crazy world. If being away from society doesn't sound like a great time, El Paso still keeps its mixed cultures and history alive through its architecture. Bill Crawford states “… [T]he most far-out thing about El Paso is its culture, an energetic melding of Old Mexico, New Mexico, West Texas, and even a dash of Bhutan” (1). El Paso has many different hotels,
Becoming Mexican American is George J. Sanchez’s document how Chicanos survived as a community in Los Angeles during the first part of the twentieth century. He goes into detail of how many thousands of Mexicans were pushed back in to Mexico during a formal repatriation. Those that survived in Los Angeles joined labor unions and became involved in New Deal politics.
Section A: I am a Mexican-American woman, born to Mexican immigrant parents, and by birthright an American citizen. In my phenotype, I do not look like a stereotypical American, with blonde hair, blue eyes, or a light complexion. I have black hair, dark brown eyes, and a light brown skin complexion. While exploring my identity and my sense of belonging in my Mexican-American, or Chicana identity, I can relate to the growth and development described in the Model of Death and Dying. For, I have the privileges of an American, but have witnessed discrimination against my fellow Mexicans counterparts.
Mexicans immigrated to the United States back in the 1800's (Stanford, 2006). During 1848 the United States took over a part of Mexico which is now the Southwest (Stanford, 2006). Mexicans living in these areas were Mexican citizens before the acquisition. The United States even went into agreements with Mexico to have Mexicans work in the United States. Mexicans were treated with cruelty, while working the agriculture fields for years. The United States made several agreements with Mexico to have the Mexicans come work in the United States while American soldiers were fighting in the world wars. The labor shortage that the United States went through was reason enough to have Mexicans migrate to the United States as laborers. The United
A mexican american girl coming from an uneducated family going to Stanford University was quite a surprise for many. Getting a full ride scholarship to Stanford university was was even a greater surprise. Who would've thought that she was going to be competing against the smartest kids of America. For many as well as for her getting a full ride scholarship to Stanford University was impossible, but to her surprise she was in and there she went not knowing what to expect. As she arrived her sympathetic nervous system kicked in. Her heart was beating like it had never before as she heard all the places people came from. Germany, Korea, England, Serie, Greece, Spain and many others. China the most common nationality. That mexican american girl is from Salinas were 72.6% of the
The 1965-1980 the Mexican Americans, were over the discrimination and the poor life conditions. They looked to find a new way of living from building a Chicano identity. The Pride and Prejudice action stated through a few farm workers named Ceasar Chavez and Dolores Huerta who protested on Sacramento for fair pay and justified working conditions. The level headed discussion over undocumented outsiders erupts, with a backfire that in the long run incorporates calls for fixed fringes, English-just laws and endeavors to mark undocumented workers as a deplete on open assets. All the while, the Latino impact is blasting in
From January 20 to 23, I went to Santa Fe and San Ildefonso in New Mexico with Dr. Laughlin and my classmates. I was totally surprised by the architecture of the housing and the rich collection of Native American cultures. I expected to see traditional suburbs but instead I found almost everyone has built houses resembling traditional adobe homes which I had never seen. Houses, businesses, government buildings including museums are almost built in this style. The colors seem to blend in with the desert. One of the most exciting events I attended in New Mexico was the museum presentation of the Zuni tribe. Although we actually did not meet the Zuni tribe, we learned a lot about them because Dawn Kaufmann who is a guide at the Museum of

I fell in love with Ruidoso, New Mexico, the first time I saw it and kept going back for different reasons. Either for shows, shopping, or to go visit newly made friends. Ruidoso is a quiet mountain/tourism community that has attracted many people from all walks of life and of course boast of some famous people such as Geronimo and of course Billy the Kid. Paul Dowlin and his brother Will had started this little community and one of their buildings still stands today. Others followed their path to make a life for themselves and with automobiles being built a road was constructed for the people to get to Ruidoso other than horse and cart.
