The first symbol I noticed that was important was the red balloon. I thought this was important because, in the story it kinda came out of nowhere and it meant something. Nia was waiting for Bobby at the end of the stairwell with the red balloon, no one knew what it symbolized at first, that's why it was so important. She then handed Bobby the balloon and he knew that it meant something was about to change. Later on he found out the balloon symbolized Nia's pregnancy.
The second symbol I noticed was the wall. This stood out to me because Bobby was going to do something to the wall that was important. Another reason this was important was because, when he started to spray paint the wall he was having flash backs to his childhood, and his old life. Everything just started coming at him all at once, and he used the wall to make a visible picture of

Another reason this was important was because, when he started to spray paint the wall he was having flash backs to his childhood, and his old life. Everything just started coming at him all at once, and he used the wall to make a visible picture of what he was seeing. The wall symbolized a canvas for Bobby to put all the memories of his old life
Symbols are used to represent something else deeper than the actual meaning either in real life or in literature. In the story “The Scarlet Ibis”, Doodle who is mentally and physically disabled was not expected to live. Although, he did live, however, he could not do things other children could do such as walk or talk. Therefore, his older brother set out to teach him because he was embarrassed to have an abnormal brother. However, many years later Doodle is soon overworked until he can no longer go on, and he sadly dies. In “The Scarlet Ibis”, James Hurst uses the caul, the oriole nest, and the blood od Doodle as symbols to offer greater insight into abstract ideas that are difficult to understand on their own.
According to Wikipedia, a symbol is a mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object, or relationship. Symbols allow us to go beyond what is known or seen by creating links between concepts and experiences. They help create a better understanding of the plot, theme, or characters in literature. For example, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding consists of several symbols. The novel is about a group of British boys who are stranded on an island with nothing but their knowledge of human civilization. They try to create a society of their own, but it begins to subside as they descend into savagery. Symbols like the conch, the beast, or the painted masks help reveal their true nature. However, the most important symbol is the fire. Golding uses the fire to paradoxically represent savagery, destruction and most significantly hope of rescue. He describes the fire as technology that menaces destruction if it gets out of control, yet ironically it also symbolizes the boys’ connection to human civilization.
Symbolism is used in many ways and writers use symbolism to “enhance their writing.” It can give their work “more richness and color and can make the meaning of the work deeper.” In literary work the actions of the characters, words, action, place, or event has a deeper meaning in the context of the whole story. The reader needs to look see the little things like a dove symbolizes peace, or like the red rose stands for romance. Mostly everything can have a symbolism meaning to it. For instance the flag symbolizes freedom and the stars represent the states. Even some signs are symbols like when a beaker has a skull with a bones placed like an ‘x’ behind it symbolizes that it’s toxic or bad. When people see the red light when driving that’s
Bobby will be coming of age and symbolizing his coming of age is a balloon. A balloon is the best thing a child could get for a gift. On Bobby's 16th birthday his girlfriend Nia arrives to his house with a red balloon and some news. Nia tells Bobby that she is pregnant. So the gift of a balloon represents Nia's childhood and she is giving it away. It is also red, and red can symbolize a few different things. Red is the meaning of love, anger, and fear. Nia is giving her love to bobby, but she fears what is going to come, and angry that this is happening to her.
The greatest and first object/symbol is the basketball on page 23. “I lay my basketball down and it rolled out the door into the hall toward Mary’s room,” (pg 23) A basketball does not roll away if it just gets laid down. The basketball normally stays where it is at that moment. The basketball represents Bobby’s childhood because a basketball is greatly associated with children.
One important symbol is how the title plays a part in the first chapter. Bobby says on page 4, "But I figure if the world were really right, humans would live the first part last. They'd be all knowing in the beginning in the end." This excerpt means that it would make more sense if humans were born into this world guilty and knowing everything and left the world innocent and with someone at their side. A baby, for example, is born not knowing anything. They always have someone by their side and catering to their needs. However, as you exit the world, you have no one by your side and you die knowing that you were always guilty for something. This is a symbol because it shows how Bobby wants the world to work. This is a symbol for love since he wants to leave the world peacefully and by someones
We would define symbol as "an object that represents an idea" and an idea is not physical. In the first part last, there are many symbols that represent coming of age. For my first example, there is a red balloon in the first chapter given to the main character, Bobby, by his girlfriend, Nia. The red balloon represents coming of age because balloons are associated with toddlers or young children, also showing how nia is pregnant. It is sort of ironic because Bobby is sixteen, showing that he's has grown out of liking balloons unlike the associated age group
In the novel Reservation Blues, Sherman Alexie uses a great deal of symbolism. What may come across as just an object actually has a meaning. From specifically Robert Johnson’s guitar to the vast population shown dealing with alcoholism, Alexie creates a deeper meaning of the novel. The most well represented symbol in the novel is Robert Johnson’s guitar.
"First Part Last"? Or First Part First? Bobby wishes that he didn't have to leave his childhood behind yet is forced to at the realization that Nia, his girl friend, is pregnant. So in the book, did Bobby grow up or not and why? I believe he did due to these three symbols: Tagging the wall, Basketball, and the Skiing Trophy.
The red ballon is a symbol that his child hood is pretty much over he is going to be coming of age. will be a father soon. Bobby is not ready to be a father because he is still just a kid just like Nia. Both are still going to school as well in other words they are in deep water.
An example of a symbol in the novel is the beach roses. In the book, Cadence and Gat took walks together. During one of those walks, Cadence and Gat notice lined up beach roses and that memory stayed with Cadence. She said “Beach roses lined the path, deep pink”. (Lockhart pg. 15) She says “their smell was faint and sweet”. (Lockhart pg. 15) Those beautiful beach roses symbolized Cadence and Gat’s beautiful relationship. Summer 17 arrives and it all changes. Cadence finds an envelope of dried up beach roses. She was thrilled at the fact that Gat did that for her. She must have been hallucinating though, because Gat was dead. The dried roses will symbolize Gat and Cadence’s relationship because it’s dead and “dry”. The beach roses are a prime example of symbolism, but something as large as a house can also symbolize something.
Also, in the story one of the symbols that doesn't represent anything for Nia or Bobby is the teddy bear because it represents a symbol for Nias mom because it was one of the things she held while Nia was in the hospital. Nias mom held this because she felt as to it was the only thing she had left of her daughter. So the teddy bear could symbolize comfort or it could also symbolize Nia for instance in the book Nias mom kind of shows a little bit of
In literature, symbols are used to represent something else beyond their original meaning. Many authors used symbols to portray the themes of their work without actually saying what their work is about. In “Symbolism in Literature,” it explains how symbols can have different meanings in literature and even in poetry. Claire McCarthy shows many symbols in her essay, “Dog Lab.” In “Dog Lab, “ McCarthy shows how symbols took full effect on her life and the decisions she made. Without the use of symbols, McCarthy’s argument about personal beliefs over studies wouldn’t have been expressed. McCarthy’s use of symbols, such as the dog, the television, and the rain, shows that it’s important to focus on your own personal beliefs rather than focusing
Bobby said "Finally it's just me and the thing in the baby carrier who doesn't have a face for a Long time...the carrier sails through the painting, following the ghost boy." (Johnson Pg 60) the thing in the baby carrier is Feather but Bobby can't find a face for her, he can't figure out the identity of the baby and ghost boy, he doesn't know who he is or what his purpose is in life but he does know that he will still have the baby with him the whole way. The baby Carrier is a symbol of the responsibilities, destress, joy, fear, pain, adventures to come, and absolute independence from all other advisable adult figures. Bobby has to be the adult in his daughters life. He shows these responsibilities when he chooses to move to heaven, away from city life and bad memories in order to make a better more successful life for him and
The second symbol is the seven rooms. They were all different colors. They represented the
