It was that time of year. The day that we’ve been preparing for, for weeks, months, and even 6:00 a.m practice. This was our chance to show who we are and what we have strived to achieve for as long as I can remember. Sectionals. The most intimidating time of the volleyball season. For many, it isn’t a challenge. Just another typical match against an irrelevant opponent, but to us, it was war. To others, their competition is mediocre and just a match to laugh about. Volleyball is a whole different game.
October 19, 2016 is the first round of sectionals. We play the Batesville Bulldogs. Our season opener opponent that we successfully took home the W in five nail biting sets. The bus ride there is quiet, everyone has their headphones plugged in getting pumped up for the match. Focus. There was not one thing that could distract us from getting that W once more to bring back home. Until, we walked in the door. We’ve been here before, so it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that it was their home court advantage. We were the underdogs it seemed like, but the focus is still strong, headphones turned up even louder. We walk into the locker room and get our things together to start warming up. We all get in a circle and pray that this is our year. We hug, we sing, we dance, and we sure as heck scream at the top of our lungs.
The ref blows his whistle for the captains to toss the coin. The nerves get higher, but still focused. Batesville with the first serve of the game with an ace against my team mate. I quickly run to her and make it obvious that it’s okay and to shake it off. Batesville with the second serve and a perfect pass, but we lose the point due to attack error. At this point in the match we are down 0-2. Our loud, obnoxious, high blood pressured coach is already breathing down our necks to get our heads in the game where it should’ve been on the first serve. Not only does this affect our confidence, but it affects our mental focus throughout the match. We all separate to our own huddle to get back our mindset and remember we can win this.
It was coming to the end of the match and we were down by three in the fifth set. This is the most intense focus we have played all year. “We got this” we all say at once
With the Christmas tournament aside, we entered the post-season without a loss. We had a plan for each playoff game from districts to regional. We never deviated from the plan, keeping our eye on the target –
When first learning the different technical aspects of volleyball, I wasn’t exactly thrilled. During my first practice, I had no idea what it meant to be athletic until I realized the necessity of hustling and focusing
The sport of volleyball was created by a man named William G. Morgan of Holyoke, Massachusetts in 1895. Morgan was a physical education teacher at the YMCA and called it "mintonette". It was an indoor or outdoor pastime that had characteristics of both handball and tennis. The first rules were written down by Morgan himself. He wrote that the game called for a 6 foot 6 inch net and a court of 25x50 feet. A match composed of 9 innings and 3 serves for each team in each inning. In case of a serving error they got a second chance just like in tennis. If the ball it the net
Walking out onto the opponent’s brightly lit turf field setting up for the kickoff of the second half just gave me the feeling that everybody knows, my hair starts to stand up, butterflies began to flutter in my stomach, and everything seems to slow down. Looking into the stands and seeing that our hometown fans had traveled four hours in order to outdo the home crowd gave me a sense of comfort. Looking into East Jefferson’s stands and seeing that our fans, despite having to travel all the way down south, outnumbered their fans by at least 70 people. I found myself thinking that this meant just as much to our town as it did to our school and team. This feeling would be just the motivation we needed in order to finish this game
The next game was early in the morning against region 3 who is known to have some of the best players around nut after the end of the 2nd period we were tied 3-3. “Lets rush the the nat and try to score”, Matt our top scorer said. “No, let's just stay in our own zone and just play defence and not then them score. after we see a weakness we just rush ahead and attack!” said Joe, another player on the team. I didn’t think much of Joe and I voted for Matt’s idea. I shouldn't have. The nest period we got swept off our feet the the south in the dust bowl. We lost
Volleyball season had started, and that means six o’clock practices bright and early. Practice was two hours long before school. I could feel the anxiety in the gym that day; everyone was nervous, thinking about what was to come. We did not play the best that day, to say the least. We kept seeing people walking past the gym, wishing they were anywhere else. The whole team was waiting for the clock to read eight so we could rush upstairs to change. At last, Coach let us take down the nets and go get ready. Our excitement led us to break record time taking down the nets.
In 2016, more than ever, the team was committed to and had one goal of winning. One of our biggest rivals was St. John’s College High School (SJCHS). My doubles partner and I played the last match of the WCAC championships against SJCHS. During the season, SJCHS was one of the hardest competitors we faced but walking onto the court on the final day of championships, my partner and I knew we would fight and win. After 45 minutes, I hit an ace and we won the match that put us in the lead to win the championships. October 30, 2016 was the single most exciting and overwhelming day for the team all season. Everyone’s hard work paid off.
I felt that this was the game in which our team found our groove and finally connected together for an entire ninety minutes. From then on we took each game one step at a time and considered our opponents one at a time, and in doing so, focusing on the smaller goals allowed us to achieve our greatest goals. This season is the first time in program history that women’s soccer at Fairleigh Dickinson has gone undefeated. Not only that, but it is the first time FDU has won the women’s soccer title in the NEC tournament and therefore, it is our first birth into the NCAA tournament. Having all of these accomplishments all happen in senior year makes these moments even more special, and looking back on it now, having the hardships of our past is what prepared us for greatness this
With about 30 minutes of a quick break Coach Gad gathered us into the hallway for a congratulations and another motivation speech. From what I can remember of the speech it had a lot to do with how everyone doubted us and no one believed we could make this far. After hearing this I and probably everyone else got this huge spark of fire ready to win the championships. As we made our way back to the gym the buzzer buzzed and the game was about to begin. The team we were playing was Marlboro one thing everyone knew about this team was the had this star player named Grace who basically was the whole team. Every set was basically for her for her and every dig she seemed to get. Knowing this made ourselves play smart and try our hardest not to spike the ball to her. We were serving first Alyssa gave a beautiful float serve that Grace passed and spiked which gave Marlboro the first point. Losing the first point didn’t break our confidence, throughout the entire set the points were coincidently going back and forth. A key play in the first set was when Grace was approaching for a spike Megan roofed her. Everyone who was cheering for us went crazy you could feel the floor shaking from our screams. Even with our enthusiasm Marlboro was determined to win the first set 25 to
"Everyone’s composure, no panicking I don't even know what to say," Douglas said. "We just wanted to win and no one panicked. And coach told us, he said, it don't matter what happens, as long as we win by one point, we will be fine. Crazy thing is, we won by one
We had battled with them with all our strength in two sets, for it wasn’t even close (compound). The winning point was a serve into the net by Washington. We had just won the game.
The team was ready, we had been working extremely hard for the past seven months for this. We were all in great shape and very rested. A few of the returning players were meeting me at my house to carpool to the final game of the state championship tournament. Everyone knew that the hard work had paid off when we won the semi-final game the preceding day.
The popularity of Volleyball has increased dramatically over past years. This is a result of commodification. Commodification is the process of turning something into a commodity that can be bought and sold. Over the past 20 years, Volleyball has evolved from a simple, fun and recreational sport to a more appealing, more sexualized version, beach volleyball. As a result of this evolution, beach volleyball has received a vast improvement in popularity, especially amongst a male audience. The intent of this essay is to examine the sport of beach volleyball and explain why the individuals, and the sport itself, have evolved throughout the years. Volleyball’s transformation into beach volleyball is a positive step forward for the sport in
We officiated the first round of tournament play for the silver division. The teams playing were Northern Impact 16’2s team and Crex 15’s team. The first set was uneventful; however, the second set issues started to arise. Northern Impact had run a 5-1 in the first set and the second set, but with different setters. Issues started to arise as I called them first on being out of rotation as the setter was in the incorrect spot before the server on the opposing team had made contact. I then proceeded to call her on multiply carries. After the second time calling her, I turned to her coach and told her that the player in question had to quicken up her contact as she was almost catching the ball, bringing it to her chest, and then throwing
Volleyball, one of the world's greatest sports. From the hot and muggy gym, to sweat dripping down each players face, volleyball is not for the faint of heart. This sport requires a single-minded desire: to win. It takes more than just teamwork to win. Volleyball has always been one of my favorite sports. I would always meet a new friend anywhere I would go. Believe it or not these situations are how you could meet your life long best friends.
