Football Game I stood in front of the crowd of Newton High football fans with my arm raised saluting the waving American flag. The beginning of a sunset behind the flag only made the band’s ceremonious playing seem slightly more personal in attendants hearts. As they charged through the last notes, the hip to hip crowd went crazy. This marked the official beginning of my last football season. There were a few things that ran through my mind while I repeated the team’s fight song to the tune of “I’ve Been Working on the Railroad”, for the thousandth time. First, I’ve always hated the smell of stale, one dollar, popcorn, but that seemed to be the only thing in the air. Overly dated cheese and salt blew into my mouth. Every blow of the 92 degree …show more content…
Every year now for four years I have gotten to see the look in seniors faces as cheerleaders and Railiners honor their school with our age old solute. My friends laughed at each other as they try to mimic us and failed. Nothing brings a smile to my face more than the utter joy in theirs. Third and finally, I never want to leave this hell they call high school, because I fear I will never have this kind of connection with this many people in my life again. Family is an adequate word to describe the blood bond we have formed in the last 6 years. As I looked at the rail of seniors my smile is so wide the freshmen on the back row could undoubtedly understand my adoration for my perfect family. As we heard the band round out the fight song and go into “chugga chugga CHOO CHOO” chaos seats in. I saw that the band has formed the tunnel for the team to run through. I felt myself drop everything and set into a dead sprint. I was being followed by a herd of spirit team members who all wanted a good position to see our boys with adrenaline pumping out the ears run through us. This was when we realize how much each and every one of them wants the win. Each of the fifty or so boys who were about to give their heart and sole on the field, wanted a victory for themselves, but more importantly, for our family at Newton
The pressure was on. Myself as well as my middle school football team had been practicing for weeks to beat our opponent, Southport Middle School. They had beaten up the year before and it was our turn to pay them back.
Bootleggers counterfeited prescriptions and liquor licenses to gain access to alcohol. The most common was to import liquor from other countries on ships. The river between Detroit and Canada was a great entry point as was the overland method on the long border between the two countries. Bootleggers also evaded authorities by building secret breweries with intricate security systems and lookouts.
It is the state championship game and your team has rose up from the bottom of the ranks. Even though you are the underdog, your team has pushed through any obstacles that were thrown in your way. You are much smaller than the number one team in the state, but you still find a way to keep the game tied. You are the senior quarterback and it would mean everything if you won. The fans are all in the stands screaming and you smile as you take in your last experience under the Friday night lights. There are two minutes left in the second half and the ball gets snapped on the third down at the 20 yard line. You catch the ball and look around frantically. All of your receivers are covered and you decide you have to run, but before you can move, a 300 pound linebacker slams you to the ground. A flag is thrown, but it is too late, everything goes black, after a few seconds, you regain sight, but you are still in a daze. You slowly stand up, but fall over immediately. You have a few seconds to rest while the ref is checking on you, your head is pounding as you feel the concussion, but you want to keep playing. Your coach leaves it up to you, and you step back out onto the field. You are now at the 15 yard line and the ball is snapped. You make eye contact with your wide receiver and pass the ball, it sails through the air. As you watch it leave your hand, you see the same linebacker out of the corner of your eye. Everything goes black again, but this time you don’t wake up. This
The heat bears down on me, as I feel my skin burning in the hot summer sun. Dust and dirt floats around the air and a thin layer of grime covers my entire body. Sweat drips around my goggles while adrenaline fills my body and my heart races. In the middle of nowhere in Virginia, I feel at home, I feel the turf under my cleats and the cool metal of the stick in my hands. As the timer ticks down, the buzzer rings, and the game begins. I look to my left and see my dad sitting on the sideline, ready to cheer as loud as possible. To my right I find my teammates, the most loyal group of friends I have, ecstatic about the potential of winning.
Heavy rain was sluicing from the sky. Lighting struck and smote two light post causing them both to go out. The crowd gasped but remained in their seats gripping hold of their umbrella's and bags over their heads. The game continued and soon my team and I was racing against the clock. Cedarwood had managed to intercept and score, and if we didn't get a touchdown soon, the game would be over.
It was the last game of the season, a televised football competition vs Murphy high school, a big rivalry game that Vigor was projected to lose. Going into the game I never knew how much this game would change my life. Down 28-27 in the fourth quarter with three minutes and eight seconds left on the game clock, my teammates and coaches leaned on me to close out the game to help ensure a victory.
The undefeated Union Titans huffed, puffed and panted going back and forth for sprints. Coach was brutal. One after the other the stampede ran across the field. Pain filled the faces of weak links, while the stronger starters held their pain in order to please coach. Usually if the next sprint is faster than the last we would have a shortened sentence but, today was different, today was the last time we could put in work before meeting face to face with Richland.
One fall morning, when the sun has not come and there is still darkness, I arose from my slumber awaiting the big day I would have ahead. While I am getting ready for the game, by putting on my pads, I get ready to step out my house and get ready for an intense three hours. As I walk to the car, I can already sense the coaches hollering, and the parents just hoping that nothing would go wrong. Each road that we pass and the closer and closer that I get to the field the hollering and the screaming become louder, louder, louder, and louder. Until they stop, as I step on the field, I no longer hear the hollering and screaming. All I can hear are the coaches getting us ready for the game that would happen in fifteen
This is going to be a story about me performing the last “Seen/Unseen” show of my freshmen marching season. This is being told to you to explain all the hard work and effort I put into making this dream of mine come true, my dream ever since 6th grade has been to perform for James Logan Band. Performing this show has honestly been one of the biggest achievements I have had throughout my life, and this event is something that I will truly never forget.
High school football over the years has become a huge spectacle lets just talk about the DWF area or we can even get smaller to make a point if you made a 25 mile radius these local high school teams play at the Star (seats 12,000), Allen stadium (seats 18,000 cost 60 million), and McKinney’s new stadium (seats 12,000 costs 69.9 million). This is just high school football these young kids playing under tremendous pressure from the start. The pressure to play high school football is immense, there are so many media outlets for these kids, and they get coverage from what it seems like all the time during the season, yet this is all just considered a recreational activity I think it has become more than that now. The pressure for coaches is high as well dealing with parents, board members, keeping up with classes as a teacher, and oh you also have to win since football is a performance-based business (forewarning this will be said a lot). For example I will refer to Boobie Miles from Friday Night Lights for one final point. Boobie knew if he did not make it in football there was nothing special for him. That is why when he got hurt he still wanted to play, because he knew that’s all he had. That is a lot of pressure for a 16-18 year to handle, and if they are not up for it they crack.
But the pride had 110% confidence in their selves. This may have been one of the hardest/encouraging game yet, we knew we could not lose to them. In the middle of the 4th quarter our starting quarterback had gotten injured, everyone took off their helmets and got on one knee. There was no more sound of laughter, chanting, singing. It was all serious, a teammate to us is not just a teammate, he is family. The sports med crew had ran out there and helped him, we could tell he was in a lot of pain but we knew he would be just fine. Everyone prayed and hoped he would be fine. 10 minutes later the trainers carried him off the field we didn’t know what was wrong with him yet, but we still had to continue the game. There was 5 minutes left in the quarter and the score was 35-42 with the pride still in the lead. The time went fast, with the 4th quarter coming to a end. The pride had did it, they had one by a shocking touchdown. At the end of the game we all went to our injured quarter back. We all went on one knee and smiled at each other, we now knew we had a special bond, not only in football but in our
My last name was shouted from my left and my body immediately cascaded from the bench to the bright sideline. The man in the striped shirt waved me over from the other side of the elongated field. This was my chance, all the sweat and tears from preseason would finally pay off. My hand slapped my team mate that I subbed in for, everything became
This wasn’t just your typical football practice before your first game, this was trying to get everyone hyped after a rather laid back Monday practice. This was a more competitive practice than usual, trying to get everyone motivated for the first game against Clarksburg. Coach Song thought it would be a good a time to divide everyone up into teams, Team Zuckerman and Team Johnson. The teams were named after our running back and myself, who were voted team captains. In between drills we would have little competitions between both teams to try to bring a competitive edge for everyone to get excited for practice. Emotions were at an all-time high because Coach Song had yelled at us after the first practice to get us excited to on
As we line up outside the locker room in two filled lines. Everyone is jumping up and down, hitting each other’s shoulder pads getting excited. As everyone is ready and set to go, we sprint past the fence making our way to the cheerleader tunnel and screaming fans. I get the goose bumps as I see the bright field lights hit the fog and field. The team reaches the tunnel and heads on the field, and then you hear the announcer say, “And your New Holstein Huskies!” The fans yelling and screaming, it’s GAME
Now on behalf of all of us graduating seniors, I'd like to thank all of the parents for all of the
