El Capitan
When you enter the valley, the first thing you probably notice after all of the people is the great granite giant rising up from the meadow and riverbank of the Merced River.
This monster is known as El Capitan, my first introduction to this “rock” was when The Guide told me a story about Ozzy and Sharon Osborne’s kid, Jack. Apparently, his idea of going through a rebellious period, and seriously, as the kid of the front man of Black Sabbath, how do you even define rebellion, was to train and learn how to climb the face of El Capitan. The photo shared with me showed Jack camped out in a swinging hammock nailed to the face of the rocks a million feet in the air. What is wrong with that kid?
I stood in the parking lot and blinked at the rock trying to imagine the sheer guts it takes to climb it. As I am standing there, I notice dots moving up the side. More people doing it! Are they crazy, too?
This towering rock formation rises up to 7,573 feet above sea level and 3,000 feet from the valley floor. It is located at the western end of the valley. Its name is derived from the original Native American name that was loosely translated to mean “rock chief.”
There is a long history of El Capitan scaling, and people, okay, GUYS, think it is a good idea to try and set, then break records of free climbing the face.
There are a number of climbing routes that will take you to the top of El Capitan, and none of them are easy. In fact, some are extremely dangerous.
Because this granite giant was considered impossible to climb, it was climbed and has become a standard for any wall climbing anywhere else in the world.
Since the 1950s, enterprising souls have blazed new trails over this structure and established routes over every face of it.
Yvon Chouinard helped blaze the North American Wall on the southeast face in 1964. Chouinard has equipped us all with his clothing and hiking gear under his Patagonia label. He also helped establish a number of other El Capitan routes.
Free climbing is another challenging pastime where climbers rely on finger holds and bolt placement to scale the face. All other equipment is meant to keep them from falling, not as a climbing aid. Free climbing is usually a solo act.

Free solo climbing, also known as free soloing, is a form of free climbing and solo climbing where the climber performs alone without using any ropes or other equipment, depending completely on his or her ability instead. Alex Honnold is very well-known for his free solo ascents. For him, doing this particular activity gives him control, a sense of calmness, and enjoyment. There are many risks and consequences that are incorporated with it, such as fatality. One simple mistake can cost your life. Many view extreme sports athletes as nothing, but risk-takers and daredevils with a death wish. I personally would never attempt free soloing, due to my fear of heights. Although I would never attempt it myself, I do not believe that free solo
Looking for a new hobby? Well, you're in luck because I’ve got a great one. Rock climbing is an activity everyone should try for many reasons. The sense of accomplishment when finishing is unlike any other. Rock climbing usually takes you to a high point (a mountain or cliff) and from these high points, you have an opportunity to observe the beauty of nature. Exercise, of course, is a positive attribute to rock climbing.
Have you ever gone climbing and got stuck for 5 days and 7 hours?Do you think you could survive these harsh conditions? Over many years of Aron Ralston’s life he has been rock climbing but on this mundane climb, something really bad went wrong. He explains everything in the book Between A Rock And A Hard Place. Over these few days while he was stuck, he had to grow in not only his physical state but also in his mental state. If the situation wasn't bad enough, he only has his left arm that he can use and has a limited supply of food and water.

Beside the retired and corroded cottonseed and canola mill located in downtown Oklahoma City, Oklahoma is a massive bright turquoise-painted grain elevator. It’s covered with a mural depicting a wing spanned scissortail flycatcher flanked by two bison, a bison head, and wheat dancing in the background. The unique thing about this particular grain elevator is renovated into a rock climbing gym called Climb UP. According to the company’s website, climbupgym.com, sixteen silos and uniquely shaped rooms make up the 90-foot-tall building (Climb Up, LLC. 2016). He also said Climb UP houses rock climbing routes up to 140 feet long. Climb UP is an indoor rock climber’s paradise.
There are climbers like Dean Potter, TM Herbert, and Alex Honnold, Royal Robbins, Tommy Caldwell, and Kevin Jorgeson. Dean Potter is known for free-soloing, base jumping, ascent’s, speed ascent’s. But sadly he died recently in a base jumping incident where he flew into a cliff with his buddy who also died. TM Hebert and Royal Robbins reengineered rock climbing in Yosemite by making the first ascents up (the) certain face(s) of Washington Column, Half Dome, and the notorious El Cap. Alex Honnold is notorious for scaling El Cap’s nose in 2½ hours. He also scaled Yosemite Triple Crown in 18 hours and 50 minutes. Then Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson free climbed the Dawn wall which was the first time this had ever happened. It was deemed impossible to do, yet it was completed. But there are still so many challenges not yet completed in Yosemite. There is so much to climb, it is just beautiful. So many people go hiking and see this beauty, but when you rock climb for days at a time to get to a spot that takes 8 hours to hike too. It is exhilarating to know you can do what what others don’t dare. But along with this excitement, people that want to experience this and don’t train are a
Ever since,it has been attractiong many professional climbers and some non professional ones who hire some professional guides when climbing it.

I cannot think of anything more exciting than climbing a 60 foot rock face with a likely chance of falling. I had the chance to climb a difficult route on the Lower Slabs at Seneca Rocks and the only way up is a vertical gap in the rock. The route was a lot more difficult than I had expected, half way up I had to jump to a handhold and missed. This caused me to slam into the rock face, bruising my shoulder and my ego. Rather than continue forward I repelled back down to reassess the climb and watch how other climbers made the ascent. After a short break, I attempted the climb again and this time I was able to complete it.
can't climb it. The wall can't be climbed so the only way to go over it is to fly over and you need a
Garden of the Gods is a public park with permitted rock climbing and many different trails to take. The rocks are huge and look as if they were made from red clay. The rocks very in size, shape and color, many taking a square form. The trails lead through many
The first view is by the park officals. The main concern is hiker safety. The The park wants people to be able to desens the rock in 45 minutes. They post signs telling people if a storm is imminent, however people flout the warning signs and continue to the top. In the past, up to 1,200 hikers a day climbed to the top and getting off the mountain was slow and difficult. In 2011 the park
Climbing the first ten or fifteen feet of the face was alarming, but so was the thought of the ridicule I would incur from my daughter if I did the make it to the summit, so I chose to up rather than down. I have been told that I tend to over-think things and I must have been doing that before I started my climb. I observed that climbing the face would not be a casual process but a detailed operation which required careful examination of each possible climb foothold or handhold, developing a mental climb plan based on the observations of the holds and adhering to, or modifying when required, the plan during each step of the climb. Since I am more of a crawler rather than a rock climber, and I am more disorganized than organized, this was very
