It was an early morning South east Alaska. I wake up in the car and I see trees surrounding the road. Big, thick pines and evergreens are throughout the forest surrounding our destination. The smell of pines and sticky sap was everywhere when I rolled down my window. The sun was beginning to rise over the forest and warm the surrounding area with rays of sun. Our destination was Mendenhall glacier.
As we drive down the gravel road we come across a log cabin and we pick up our guide. When we pull up I can already see just how massive this glacier is. As we put on our crampons to have a better grip of the slippery surface of the glacier. They feel like cold metal against my fingertips. As I walk towards it I a stand in awe of the size and the chill blast of air when the wind blows. The guide says that we should wear sunglasses because the ice will reflect the sun and blind us. As we begin the hike on the glacier, wearing my winter coat. As I trudge up the glacier we stop for water. It didn’t have the plasticly taste or metallic taste water can have.
Walking around we hear a screech from an Eagle flying overhead reminding us that we are still in the wilderness. The guide, Zach, talked about the neighboring wildlife near us. Bears were a common siting in the forest surrounding the glacier.
