Mona Lisa
Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa seems to be the most famous painting in the world, and today it hangs in Louvre Museum in Paris. Considered one of the most significant works of art ever created, it serves as a modern-day object of pilgrimage for people worldwide. It is believed that the painting was created between 1503 and 1519, during the time Da Vinci was living in Florence. Since the Mona Lisa was created in the sixteenth century, it has become a prominent work of art, influencing numerous artists of past and present, though numerous mysterious elements of the painting beg further investigation and are a source of fascination.
One of the main reasons behind the mystery of the Mona Lisa is the history of its creation and the personality of the person portrayed. Along with the exact date when the portrait was finished, it is still unclear how long the painter was working on the painting as well as the way it became a part of the French royal collection (Atalay 68). It is believed that the portrait marked a significant event in the life of the Giocondo family, either the purchase of the new house or the birth of the second son, who was born a few years after their daughter died. One of the explanations for this version, that the painting is connected to the theme of death in some way, is the dark veil covering Mona Lisa’s hair, which is believed to be a mourning veil. At the same time, it can be said that this object symbolizes virtue.
