The dentist's office was a place the staff and patients dreaded going every day. Simply a small, dull building on the corner; made up of large grey bricks and tiny, frosted over windows. It was the dead of winter and snow had already began to fall down gracefully onto the two icy front steps, causing great difficulty for the staff and patients to enter. Much the same as most mornings, the first patient was late for their appointment. She burst through the door approximately five minutes after her appointment was meant to begin, nearly slipping in her large brown boots on the patch of ice right in front of the door. Yet somehow, managed to save herself with the chilled metal railing.
The young woman was in noticeable distress. Her dark brown hair was matted, her brow was furrowed and she was clearly out of breath. The dark blue jeans she wore clung tightly to her legs. A light grey, wool sweater accompanied by a long black overcoat hung all the way down to her knees. To top it all off, she had on a small grey knitted toque and two leather black gloves to keep her small body warm in these cold winter months. Her tiny round face was covered in miniature freckles and her worried blue eyes wandered all around as she entered the building looking for reception. It smelled like mint and soap and the lighting was dim given two of the overhead lights had burnt out. Since she was aware that she was already behind schedule and did not want to push this office's day back any further,

Ever since I was in middle school, I would tell everyone that I was going to become a dentist. That was my career plan until the summer of my junior year. During that summer, I had the opportunity to do an internship and job shadow Dr. Bradshaw at his private dental office. While observing and talking to the doctor, I realized that I would not enjoy working as a dentist. I still wanted to pursue a career in the dental field so I decided to job shadow the dental hygienists. Watching the dental hygienists perform their duties and interact with patients made me want to pursue a career in dental hygiene. I knew very little about dental hygienists besides the fact that they clean teeth. As I spent time with the dental hygienists, I learned more each day. While researching for this paper, I became knowledgeable on even more information. From reading The Occupational Outlook Handbook and A Career as a Dental
“This one was hardly bigger than a garage. The table was cluttered with limp- looking magazines and at one end of it there was a big green glass ashtray full of cigarette butts and cotton wads with little blood spots on them. If she had had anything to do with the running of the place, that would have been emptied every so often. There were no chairs against the wall at the head of the room. It had a rectangular-shaped panel in it that permitted a view of the office where the nurse came and went and the secretary listened to the radio. A plastic fern, in a gold pot sat in the opening and trailed its fronds down almost to the floor. The radio was softly playing gospel music” (O’Connor 3). As the Turpins waited Mrs. Turpin began to describe the other waiting room occupants to pass the time. Mrs. Turpin can be seen as a larger woman who is proud of her means and then there is her husband Claud who can be described as a “florid, bald, sturdy and shorter than Mrs. Turpin (O’Connor 1). Next was an unnamed blonde child whose attire consisted of a dirty blue romper, the boy’s mother was seen “wearing on a yellow sweatshirt and wine- colored slacks, both gritty-looking, and the rims of her lips were stained with snuff. Her dirty yellow hair was tied behind with a little piece of red paper ribbon” (O’Connor 5). The next woman is called the “stylish woman” by
The main roles of a dental hygienists are to clean teeth and teach people on ways to preform proper oral care. Lack of proper oral health care can lead to more than just rotten teeth or gum disease, but can lead to systematic health issues. Both children and adults suffer from oral neglect. In fact some 82 million adults do not have dental heath insurance, which means most of these individuals do not go to the dentist. Also, in 2005, all of the children living at 200% of the federal poverty level did not go to any type of dental provider.
The field of dentistry has history dating back to 7000 BC and has continually changed and improved overtime through the influence of many intelligent people. The ancient cavemen of Pakistan received credit for the first documented drilling of teeth. Studies show that Pakistanian cavemen used asphalt and other creative treatments to fill cavities (“Dentistry”). This act of improving oral health laid the basis for further development and innovations in the field. Following the Pakistanian cavemen, the ancient Egyptians contributed to dentistry by creating the formula for one of the oldest recorded toothpastes. This mixture consisted of rock salt, mint, dried iris flower, and pepper. Scientists believe that this formula for toothpaste may have worked better than toothpastes developed during the 18th century (Monson). The French, the next
Helping others doesn’t have to be difficult. We know money is an issue throughout life and we can’t just provide everyone with money. But what can that money actually do? Money is traded in for goods and services right, so in theory, we don’t need money to help others, the question is more like what can we do for another. There is always one job out there that can improve our lives; we don’t have to be millionaires to contribute; we just have to try.
An ancillary dental worker specializing in scaling and polishing teeth and in giving advice on cleaning the teeth. Do you know what this definition is for? The definition above is for a dental hygienist, this is what I am going to college for. I had three choices for what I wanted to do and I picked dental hygienist. I should be a dental hygienist because they help a lot of people and that is what I want to do. I want to help people with there teeth and help clean them. Dental Hygienist has to talk with people and teach them how to take care of there teeth and I like to talk so that sounds fun to me. I want to be a dental hygienist for kids I would love to do that because I love kids. I picked dental hygienist out of three choices, it was very hard to pick what one to do, but when I put all the information together I got what I was looking for!
As a dental hygiene care provider (DHCP), the dental hygienist provide her services to a range of different clients. Canada is a cultural mosaic country, that opens its door and opportunities to many different individuals, which makes it a multicultural and diverse country. The mission of a dental hygienist is to implement the codes of ethics (beneficence, autonomy, integrity, accountability and confidentiality) when interacting with clients and their families as well as to implement effective interventions as a dental hygienist (educator, researcher, administrator/manager, clinician, public health , oral health promoter). It is very important for dental hygiene to be sensitive, aware, have knowledge, skills, and to be competent to work with client from different cultures, and to work effectively in cross-cultural situations. Dental hygienist should be in a continuos
My dream job is to be a dental hygienist and has been the same since I was a little girl. I have an interest in how health can affect one’s body. I would like to educate others how important it is to keep your body, including teeth, healthy and clean. To see people who have not cleaned their teeth in years compared to people who are able to see the dentist every six months, is a drastic difference. Some people may think it does not matter, but lack of dental care actually takes a toll on your health. I want to peruse this career to help other’s think. I will enjoy helping other people by showing them the importance of keeping their teeth cleaned. Contrary to popular belief, a tooth brush does not do all the work, that is also why it is so important to have a dentist to make sure you are getting the cleaning you need to stay healthy. Another reason why I want to pursue this career is I work best in an oriented atmosphere. Making sure people are comfortable with where they are and make sure the patients are taken care of. Creates a very friendly environment. That is why my passion is a dental hygienist.
As a dental nurse at the Eastman Dental Hospital I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work with dental hygienists in the preventative management of head and neck cancer patients, ensuring long term oral health of the dentition and preventing unwanted effects of tooth loss after radiotherapy. Inspired by this experience and with a strong desire to help others, I decided to pursue a career in dental hygiene and therapy to make a difference in people's lives through oral health care.

I never caught her name, so I always called her Gertrude because that name just screamed “crazy old lady” to me. There was an incident with some pennies a few months before that she never forgave me for, so every time she came into the store she would scoff at me in disgust. Bundled up in her fluffy purple coat, Gertrude yanked her foster child behind her as she stomped to the register. I was the only person up front, so the situation was unavoidable. “Ugh. It’s you,” she mumbled, followed by her sticking her tongue out and making a gagging noise and an always hateful, “When are you just gonna quit that way I don’t have ta see yer face when I come in here?” “Ouch.” That one actually seemed even more hateful than usual, so maybe the cold had gotten to her too. As she shuffled out the door, tiny snowflakes began to fall. My manager, Sonya, parked herself beside me in the doorway and spit out a few profanities at the sight of the snow. She was not about to go out into the miniature blizzard to take her annual -- a year in normal human time was equivalent to twenty minutes of Sonya time -- smoke break. I, however, loved the feeling of the cold numbing my fingers so much that I couldn’t feel them and making my nose resemble that of
A family dentist in Knutsford should play an important role in family care. Twice yearly appointments are necessary to keep the whole family free of dental cavities. This is an important practise, even if you take good care of your teeth and gums at home. Your dentist can check for any problems that aren’t apparent, as some dental problems don't become visible or cause any pain until they are in advanced stages.
Dentistry has a long and complex history, with the earliest evidence of it being performed being dated back to 7000 B.C. from the Indus River Valley Civilization. Later, an ancient Sumerian text mentioned “tooth worms” around 5000 B.C., and from 2900 - 2700 B.C,Egyptians began drilling teeth to drain abscesses. Etruscan and Greek physicians further progressed dentistry by pioneering dental prosthetics and writing texts that contained information about dentistry. The Roman Empire later conquered the Etruscans and absorbed some of their culture, including dentistry. In fact, the Roman medical writer Celsus wrote on many topics pertaining to dentistry. In Asia, although the Chinese did use silver amalgam fillings as early as 200 B.C., a proclamation from the Qu’ran that prohibited body mutilation prevented the advancement of dental surgery for many years. The first book to focus solely on dentistry, Little Medicinal Book for All Kinds of Diseases and Infirmities of the Teeth by Artzney Buchlein was published in Germany in 1530. Known European dental achievements were mostly French and English in the 16th and 17th century, with James Hunter, an English surgeon, pioneering the idea of teeth transplant. When the English began settling the United States, many of them brought along their dental practices. Notable American dentists during the colonial period include Isaac and John Greenwood and Paul Revere. In the 19th century, America was a hotbed for dentistry related
He walked into her office and sat down on the couch on the right. The look her sitting area in her office was nothing less than impressive. There was a wide high back white leather chair at the head of a long thick SOS Entertainment engraved glass table with four comfortable standard white leather chairs on each side. She was on the phone and had waved to him to take a seat. Unfortunately, the more he heard what she was saying or to put it bluntly, the person she was saying it to had his anger rising to the point that the sprinkler system was about to go off.
