Last year while traveling in Italy I was approached by a lovely lady who immediately started asking questions about the United States. When she found out my home was in Louisiana she got really excited. She had relatives in New Orleans but had never been able to go to visit them. We carried on quite a conversation. Telling her about the hot summers, Cajun food, and cool music made me miss my home.
When you think of the South one thing that must come to mind is the tall, moss covered oak trees still and quiet in the hot and wet summer sun. The weather in Louisiana is steamy! The slow moving days are laced with bright sunlight. It is almost tropical. The lady and I talked about the difference between the glorious light in Italy and that of the southern states. In Tennessee the big oak trees change colors and is a vacation spot in the fall. We then moved our conversation to a small café which, of course, brought up food.
Spicy Italian food has nothing on Cajun or Creole food! We love hot and spicy, from fried chicken to crawfish, boiled in spices and lemons. I descripted, in detail, how to make several well know Southern dishes and she talked pasta. I told her about pasta, the Cajun way. Food is a big part of the Italian and Southern cultures. In the pine belt Country Music is King while Gospel is best loved. Music and the South just go together. Wherever you go in the Southern part of the United States, like Georgia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, or Mississippi you will hear music on the radio, on the front porch, in restaurants and cafes, and on the street corners.
