In Richard Connell’s, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Sanger Rainsford, a man who likes to hunt for sport, gets stranded on an island called, “Ship Trap Island,” after falling off his ship. Ships that go to this island never come back. Rainsford meets General Zaroff and his assistant Ivan, who is deaf and unintelligent. General Zaroff, who lives on the island with his own rules and thoughts of hunting, shares his ways of hunting the animal he finds the best to hunt. Rainsford has other thoughts and doesn’t concur with Zaroff’s ways. What the General hunts changes Rainsford’s opinion of him. A lesson the story proposes is to not trust everyone you meet.
From the very beginning, the author uses descriptive sentences to describe what happens
One of the darker actions examined in this unit takes place in "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell. In this short story, General Zaroff begins hunting a man lost on his island named Rainsford. Bored of the usual game, General Zaroff decides he wants something more exciting and chooses to prey on humans. This ill-judged decision has a domino effect on the plot, ultimately ending in the demise of Zaroff. Nonetheless, an alternate ending besides death could have very well been a possibility. Perhaps, instead of hunting humans, Zaroff decides to open a hunting camp to share his passion for the sport with others. Obviously, his boredom is caused by the island's isolation from society. So, Zaroff could have built homes and started a community or decide to leave the island altogether. Then, the course of this story would have taken a completely different path. Maybe, Zaroff finds a wife, they have children and live happily ever after. If only he was able to overcome his dark side instead of letting it consume him.
A man gets hunted by another man on the deserted Ship-Trap Island in the middle of the Caribbean. Rainsford, the protagonist in “The Most Dangerous Game”, a short story written by Richard Connell, gets hunted by General Zaroff. Rainsford abounds with fear, making him crazy. General Zaroff’s arrogance causes him to feel that he possesses the right to hunt the people he captures. His arrogance causes him to commit gruesome things; in this case, murder. Prior to becoming another man’s prey, Rainsford feels that animals have no feelings, but he sympathizes for animals being hunted after he himself becomes prey. His feelings and opinions transform after this experience. “The Most Dangerous Game” consists of three central themes: fear makes an individual crazy, arrogance causes hurtful actions, and some experiences have the potential to alter an individual’s opinion.
In Richard Connell’s short story “The Most Dangerous Game”, the protagonist character, Sander Rainsford is an adventurous and fearless big game hunter. Rainsford has no remorse for his prey. Over the course of the story Rainsford experiences a sudden change of heart when he finds himself where “The world is made up of two classes—the hunters and the huntees.”
Rainsford came to a cliff and he was trapped by Zaroff and his hounds. Rainsford had no choice, he didn't want to surrender because he know he would get killed. There was only one choice left and it was to jump off the cliff into the water. He waited to Zaroff got close and the he jumped into the roaring waters. General Zaroff was surprised when he did that, but he knew that he wasn't going to come back because he would be to scared to. Rainsford hit the water hard and Zaroff peaked his head over to watch for Rainsford but he didn't come up, so he waited for about 10 minutes and he didn't come up so he knew he was dead, so he left and headed back to his house. Underneath the water there was a cave and in that cave was where Rainsford was hiding.in
In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, Sanger Rainsford falls off his boat, and ends up on General Zaroff’s island, known as Ship-Trap Island, and is expected to hunt with him. While at first Zaroff is a fan and becomes a friend of Rainsford’s, they both find out that they have many similarities such as their beliefs, what they have experienced in their lives, and their love for hunting which also has a difference which leads to Zaroff’s misfortune. Both Rainsford and Zaroff will try to get all the fun out of hunting, not knowing or thinking about how an animal, or in Zaroff’s case a person, feels to be hunted. On Rainsford’s yacht, Rainsford discusses with his good friend Whitney who also loves hunting, about how
Between the movie and story in “The Most Danger Game” there several things that are taken and some added. When they added the Lady in it made the story more interesting. It was more suspenseful because it felt she was slowing Rainsford down and you weren’t sure if they would get killed. An omission that took away from the story was that Ivan did not hold the gun to Rainsford’s heart in the beginning. So Rainsford did not know what was coming until later and it was not as suspenseful during the beginning of the story. These additions did effect the theme it made it even more known that animals feel pain and fear when hunted.
I will be comparing the video verion of The Most Dangerous Game to the story.
A large island where the most dangerous things happened and a small town located in the Western Territory where there was war between two men both are similar and different in many ways. In the story, The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell, the main character, Rainsford, faced a situation where he had to be killed or play the game with the antagonist General Zaroff. In the film High Noon, written by Carl Foreman, the main character, Will Kane, faced a problem with the prisoner Frank Miller who soon comes back for sweet revenge. In both the film and the story, the setting and conflict are different; however, the characters are similar, which affects the plot of both stories.
The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is about a talented hunter named Sanger Rainsford who gets stranded on an island. On the island he meets General Zaroff who is also an extremely talented hunter who has hunted over hundreds of animals, but now has a new hunting interest. Rainsford finds out that General Zaroff’s new hunting interest is hunting men who get stranded on this island. General Zaroff gives the man a head start on hiding and when midnight comes he starts to find them. If the man last 3 days on the island without being seen by General Zaroff he wins, but if he finds him he gets hunted.
The story "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell is a tale about a hunter named Rainsford who loves hunting but thinks the animals don't care about dying. During the trip, he falls overboard and through the story, he finds out what it is like to be hunted. I believe through his experience he will change his mind about animals. During his stay, Rainsford met a retired general who loves to hunt. They both loved to talk about hunting.
‘’One of us is to furnish a repast for the hounds. The other will sleep in this very excellent bed. On guard Rainsford.’’
The main theme of this short story is to always be cautious in an unknown situation. For example, “He was finding the general a most thoughtful and affable host, a true cosmopolite.” (Connell, 24) After Rainsford had been taken in by General Zaroff, he was comfortable and put his trust in Zaroff’s hands, the wrong hands. Rainsford was too trustworthy and in the end had not expected to be hunted by the General. If he had been more suspicious and cautious, then he would not be in that position. Therefore caution should be advised and to not trust so easily.
It had been a week since Rainsford managed to kill the nefarious General Zaroff. The challenging part was almost over or so it seemed. There was not a clear way for Rainsford to escape. As days passed, Rainsford tried to escape. He tried making a boat from driftwood that he found, he tried swimming, he even tried sending a signal by using a flashlight. Rainsford had become so desperate that he even tried some ridiculous plans like trying to pole vault across the ocean. As a result, Rainsford ended up having huge gashes in his left leg ,which got infected, and he had to amputate it. As days turned into weeks, and weeks into months, Rainsford had lost hope and became bitter.
How would it feel to suddenly go from being the hunter to becoming the prey? That is exactly what happened to Rainsford, one of the main characters in The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell. Rainsford was a big game hunter who accidentally fell of of his yacht. He swam to a nearby island, and there he met General Zaroff, a cruel man who hunts humans for sport. In exchange for release from the island, Rainsford agrees to be hunted by Zaroff. Consequently, Rainsford is a survivor because he kills Zaroff and wins the game. Rainsford is also a survivor because he demonstrates the qualities that a person must have to be considered a survivor. Although Rainsford is a survivor, Zaroff is not. To be considered a survivor, a person must go through a traumatic or life-threatening experience but still demonstrate resilience and determination.
The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell is a short story that involves homicide which raises conflicting questions about life. Roland Barthes says that, “Literature is the question minus the answer.” This somewhat pertains to this story as Connell proposes if humanity is relevant to life and only partially answers it as well as leaving the rest to the mind. This question creates wonder as to what is humanly right or wrong throughout the fiction.
