DESIGN CONCEPT
Requirements & needs
In designing a building that evokes attraction and curiosity among public, the aim is to create interest in the stem cell research while introducing the technology to South Africa.
The location of the building should be on an active node where people will be able to observe the building.
The facility will be inviting to the public with exhibition space, public square, auditorium for medical conferences and house a cafe’ for the visitors and serve as a break hub and for scientist to cross exchange ideas. Opening the building for public use allows for transparency in the facility but yet it should be kept in mind to still maintain a controlled sterile environment.
Urbanism
The use of brownfield sites opens up new land within urban environments, but what if we can find an alternative to these sites for smaller developments. Bridges and roadways are much needed for movement within a city, but wastes vast amounts of habitable land and space. Is it possible to claim back some of the land that this network of movement in our cities consume?
Figure 1: The site
Selecting the site to occupy the land underneath a road way using the leftover space that we cannot see or even know exists like Medical researchers have to uncover stem cells found in bone marrow and manipulate them. The site can duplicate this process by ground works; uncovering the site and disrupting the existing structure of the bridge. This allows the
Embryonic stem cell research is a highly debated and sensitive topic. There is a lot of good that can come from researching this technology of stem cell research because many people all across the globe would benefit from it. The United States will soon fall short while other countries are already using this advancement if we cannot come to a logical conclusion on this vital issue.
The sanatorium provided a diverse offering of programs and resources to patients. Their services included hydrotherapy, electrotherapy, special diets, etc. Their facilities included billiard rooms, reading rooms, music rooms, saloons, etc. Patients could access everything they needed to feel comfortable. The effective layout planning of the building contributed to effective therapy practices. Utilities and services were hidden in the basement, social gathering and dining spaces were on the first floor, and living quarters were on the second and third floors. This separation of spaces due to functions created an intuitive organizational structure. The luxury and layout referenced the style of a grand hotel, but included many quality health related benefits. With an array of functional offerings, each room in the sanatorium was designed to best serve the function of the room. For example, the bedrooms intended for tuberculosis patients had the largest windows to allow the greatest amount of sunlight possible.5
Stem cell research has been quite a controversial topic since its origin in the 1960s by Gopal Das and Joseph Altman. Of course, anything that uses a human embryo would be. Stem cell research could open a vast number of new doors for modern science, it could let us test new drugs, one of which could be the unfound cure for AIDS or Alzheimer’s disease. However, this branch of science comes at a high price, the price of a human life that is only five to six days
In preparation for this thesis on the topic of stem research and application; I gathered data through various methods to reach a broad consensus on the public impression of stem cell research. In this chapter I will discuss the findings of those ventures and the impressions it made on my research. I conducted a survey asking general information on the public’s knowledge of stem cell research and held a classroom forum asking for open opinions on research.
A single system research design (SSRD) allows for the practitioner to study an individual, family or program. Single system research design is convenient, brief and cost efficient for the practitioner(s); SSRD interventions can be tested and assist in identifying their effectiveness on the patient (Royse, et al., 2010). SSRD has a risk of bias, from both the practitioner and the patient and the information gathered is not for generalizability, because it is only observing an individual. SSRD has little external validity, but allows the practitioner to observe in individual’s response to the intervention and monitor a trend for subsequent studies (Royse, et al., 2010). The patient involved in this research study is a 40 year-old Latina female. Her primary care physician referred her to behavioral health, when she demonstrated physical symptoms of fatigue, sleeplessness and numbness in her arm, inability to concentrate and feelings of sadness. Once, all medical illnesses were ruled out, the physician, working at an integrative care clinic, referred the patient to the LCSW on staff. In her first session the patient stated that she has demonstrating these symptoms for a month or so. She states that she did not know what is happening to her but she knew she had to see her doctor. The patient described that she has been living in Arlington for about 16 years. She is originally from Mexico and is married with four children. She states that lately she has been having some issues with
To begin, after the site has been chosen several lengthy steps must follow, the site location meets all regulatory, environmental, historical and municipal zoning requirement approvals. Additionally, the property on which the tower will be constructed must be free and clear of all encumbrances and mortgages usually 100’ x 100’ square foot area of property. When all those steps are successfully completed and approved the construction can now move forward with a notice to proceed. There will be a site visit organized for the bidding process inviting pre-approved contractors, civil engineers,
The impaction of the Biocontainment Unit is, faces highly contagious disease in the community and treats those illnesses as quickly as possible with a highly skilled, trained and experienced team. For example, Nebraska Biocontainment Unit had 3 Ebola patients in last year because the unit has the largest isolation facility which includes an air-handling system, high-level filtration and ultraviolet light, autoclaves, a dunk tank for laboratory specimens, etc. In the whole country, there are three biocontainment units, including Nebraska’s; however, they chose to send Ebola patients to the Nebraska unit because of staff, equipment and the way that unit was built.

The establishment of BCP could also help improving the environment. As we know, brownfield possess of hazardous substance that could potentially harm human health. By cleaning up brownfields, risk for human health could be reduced significantly. Other than that, redeveloping brownfields could conserve up to 4.5 times more greenfields sprawl development. Greenfield means land that there is nothing built on it before. By utilizing brownfield redevelopment, it could create an opportunity for environmentally-responsible accommodation of population growth. Furthermore, it could improve air quality as well. Air pollution due to transportation could be reduced up to 40%. This is benefited from urban compact development on brownfields. Lower energy

The description of the environment of the clinic was a decent area full of fun equipments surrounding the room in different corners and sides. On the left side, there were a bunch of blue mats stack up and big bouncing bedding. On the ride side, there were a mirror, a kitchen area, a basket of musical instruments, and a corner of a rug with supplies. Toward the front, there is a white board full of the children’s names and activities that they want to do during their time in the clinic, a basket full of sport equipments, and two tables and a chair for the professionals to use for their belongings. In the middle, there is a clear space for the children and the professionals to play and use for their activities.
Community around the brownfields could really benefit from the BCP. From social aspect, population of the city could increase as the job opportunities increases. For example, the completion of Solar City could attract thousands and thousands of people to move here and revitalize the city itself. Other than that, it also improves neighborhood appearance. The city of Buffalo uses park system for the neighborhood which means you could see park almost everywhere when you are travelling in Buffalo. By redevelop brownfields area, there will be no more abandoned buildings or factories. For example, the old paper box factory in 500 Seneca had been redeveloped into offices and apartments.
Design plays a big role in the environment of hospitals, and more importantly the recovery of patients. Many problems in hospitals such as infection control can be solved with the simplest solution of the placement of the sink or sanitizing station at the point of use. The Florida Hospital Waterman located in Tavares sits in the heart of the landscape, which happens to be home to many endangered birds, allowing nature and human to coexist (Hitechos 2014).
