Design Movement : The Aspects Of The Art Deco Movement

In the 1920's Art Deco was a popular form of art. It also influenced architecture, fashion, and furniture. Art Deco used bold geometric shapes and strong colors. It used concrete, smooth stone, and terracotta as materials. Art Deco represented modernism and a bright future.

The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco style skyscraper that was built during one of the most severe economic downturns in this country's history. The building was finished in the year 1930 and is located in New York City. The Chrysler Building was constructed using stainless steel over an exposed building surface which was a first for its time (History of Walter P. Chrysler and the Chrysler Building, “n.d.). The next important thing to think about when understanding the Chrysler Building is to figure out what it was designed for. Although the building was not owned by Chrysler it was used for the corporation's offices which used the building until the mid 1950’s (Chrysler Building, “n.d). However, Art Deco was focused more on angular, geometric shapes, abstract patterns and a slick technological look (Striner 23). The main goal of the Art Deco movement was to “[serve] as an important channel between radical and traditionalist design responses to twentieth-century challenges” (Striner 21). With the constant changes happening in society it was hard to find a balance, and the Art Deco movement was an attempt to find that balance between traditionalism and modernism (Striner 24). Traditionalists were typically conservative, religious people from rural areas. They wanted to preserve their traditional and religious values (Lüsted 12). Modernists however, embraced the social change and advocated new ideologies, such as, liberalism, the sexual revolution, atheism, evolution, and socialism. Modernists were typically young, urban people who rejected traditional restrictions and values, especially those surrounding gender roles (Lüsted 12). In Fitzgerald’s novel the traditionalists are represented by the people of East Egg like Tom and Daisy Buchanan who come from money and do not really have to work in order to be successful. The modernists are represented by the people of West Egg such as Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway who did not necessarily come from a lot of money and had to work in order to become successful. Art has been a recurring part of history from the very beginning. As society changes so does the style of art. Each new style is known as a movement and one of the most prominent, long-lasting movements in recent centuries is known as Modernism. Modernism is characterized by its deviation from tradition. People who are a part of this movement found enjoyment in finding new mediums to use, creating art that revolves around feelings and emotions rather than reality. Abstract idealisms of modernism cause its viewers to need to think more critically about the art before them. In past movements, the meaning of the work was obvious as it was created to mimic reality.

Among many other things, art began to flourish and change during this era. One 1920 's décor critic stated, "The Art Deco Movement influenced the way that buildings were erected and clothes were made" (Modras). Art was such a major aspect during the 1920 's that it changed the way architects were expected to design buildings. This created a new perspective on the way houses and major buildings were looked at. In fact, these buildings were no longer just used for practical purposes but were now created to be pleasing to the eye. This movement aimed to take the decorative patterns away from natural shapes and into the modern world. Deco Art itself is a reflection of changing world cultures. It was born in France post-World War I as a sort of marriage between craft motifs and the industrial age, characterized by wealthy and bold-looking colors and shapes. The art form is well depicted in the decoration of the Rockefeller Center in New York or any of the art and decor found in the movie The Great Gatsby. This striking form represented the glamour of the age. In a great sense, the period represented a change from conservative to a more liberal view on life. This was no different in Japan.

By analyzing various articles that provides various viewpoint on the phenomenon of Modernism and its relationship to modernist architectures during the 1920s and 1930s, linkages, similarities and differences between how each author define modern architecture can be observed. These varying viewpoints encourages not only the identification of ‘Traditional’ and ‘Art Deco’ movements but also the critical understanding of modern architecture’s evolution and its relation to the societal beliefs, authority, resource and function during the Interwar Period.

Decorations that bespeak of Art Deco are colorful. The bolder the colors, the better for the theme. Sure, earth tones and neutral shades also abound, but these hues are more utilized for the walls. For a more artsy finish, use metallic paints or accent the wall corners on the ceiling side with a stencil. Designs can vary from ziggurats, surreys to lotus and scarab. Wallpapers are also acceptable with these designs if you don’t want to do a painting job. Botanical patterns or floral together with geometrical patterns are also popular Art Deco designs.

It was around this time that the second Industrial Revolution began which lead to the develop of machines that is highly used today. Sometimes, when people decide they want to get serious about decorating their homes, the choose a particular artistic style or period to use as a model. Styles come and go as the years pass, but there is one particular style that gained prominence during the first half of the twentieth century which has stood up well to the test of time. In the twentieth century, art deco took the artistic world by storm during the latter half of the roaring twenties through the 1930s. Although there was a brief period when it lost its popularity, art deco interior design is back in favor with people today.

Art deco included luxury items as well as mass-produced products, but both wings had the intention to create modern and anti-traditional designs that illustrated wealth and elegance.

As we continue to study art history, we were impressed to discover how the human beings are looking every day for change and develop, and the art work as a mirror that reflect that change. Starting from Neoclassicism art which was a reaction to the Rococo art. To the Romanticism art that was a reaction to the Neoclassicism art, and reaching the Realism art which was a reaction to both Neoclassicism and Romanticism arts. All these art movements came as a reaction to the previous one, but that does not mean that the artist of the new art would reject the preceding art elements completely. The artist would reshape some of the former art elements and work to develop them in order to reflect the era change constantly.
