Designing A Unit For First Grade

Decent Essays

Topic/Concept I plan to develop a unit for first grade where my students investigate and explore probability and statistics at a very basic, introductory level. This will likely the first introduction they 've had to these concepts as first graders. In this unit, the students will begin to question why we need to collect data, how we proceed in obtaining data, and how we represent our findings (via tables, charts, graphs, etc.). The students will identify characteristics of the collected data and will work to use appropriate mathematical language to report the results. The students will explore common misconceptions with data acquisition and reporting. By using real-world, relevant examples, the students will seek to identify the reasoning and necessity of data collection. Exploring statistics and probability, students will be encouraged to continue looking for examples of statistics and probability in their schools, homes, and communities.
