I never agreed with people when they told me not to worry about what others think and to focus only on myself. However, upon hearing my best friend tell me that I don’t care about others, the sadness I felt made me realize that this idea is not true. Even though some individuals believe that thinking only of yourself is beneficial, this mindset is bad as it leads you to be selfish, it is critiqued by society, and it offers very few advantages. When we make decisions in our daily lives and decide to think only of ourselves, we sometimes don’t realize we are hurting others. People need to be a little selfless instead of being reclusive and self-centered. In “Desiree’s Baby” by Kate Chopin, the social class prejudice in that time period in the south caused Armand to change from a loving caring husband and father to a selfish cold hearted person due to his son being dark skinned. We don’t value community since we don’t make decisions for the whole group we make them for ourselves only. In our jobs we only do what will lead us to a higher paying position, and if our position is in jeopardy we will do what ever it takes to keep it even if it means going against co-workers. This leads many people to ask the question “do I act selfishly or do I cooperate?” (Innes 2) The ways in which we raise our children has a significant affect on how they will act. If they put themselves before others constantly and think only of their own benefits, it can make them become a selfish person which will lead them to be seen as an outcast by our society.
