The American Dream
America has always been looked to as being the land of possibilities. This idea of the potential of success fueled the creation of the American Dream. Essentially, the American dream is the quintessential belief that every U.S. citizen, no matter their race, ethnic background, or social standing, has the co equal opportunity to attain success and comfort through determination, ingenuity, and a strong work ethic. This story takes place in Louisiana before the Civil War. The norm of this time was that African Americans were lesser than “normal” Caucasian Americans and they were to be treated according to this viewpoint. Desiree, the protagonist, was living the American Dream with her husband and new baby. She loved her husband desperately and Armand’s nature, due to his marriage and the birth of his son, had softened greatly (Chopin 2). He even treated the slaves in an almost caring way. However, three months later, it was brought to his their attention that the baby was not entirely white, which resulted in Armand’s complete ignorance of Desiree because, “... he no longer loved her, because of the… injury she had brought upon his home and his name,”(Chopin 3). Slaves and anyone with slavery in their bloodline, were looked down upon, Armand could not have Desiree taint his name any longer and in the end told her to leave. Even Desiree, who still desperately loved Armand, could not fathom being anything but white, as she knew what that meant for her and her baby.
