Destroyed, defeated, or both. On page 93 of The Old Man and the Sea Ernest Hemingway says, “a man can be destroyed but not defeated.” The statement can be referred to throughout the novel. Santiago, also known as the old man, courage and pride continually pushes him forward even when all hope feels lost. Destruction began with not catching a single fish for eighty-four days. He was being crushed but his spirit and pride prevented defeat. Despite his failures, he set sail once more with high hopes of catching something worth selling. And he did just that, he ventures out furthest than he has ever been, where he hooks the marlin. He battles the marlin for days and defeats the marlin, though he is physically destroyed he doesn't let it defeat
