All staff must be fully trained in safeguarding children and have the opportunity to receive further training to develop their knowledge. Staff need to be aware of the procedure for recording concerns and incidents if a child discloses information. We need to make a record of exactly what the child said in their own words and pass all the information over to the safeguarding officer, who will ensure the management is informed and all details recorded are kept confidential and stored in secure place. We ensure confidentiality is of paramount and that only information is disclosed about a child we are concerned about to another member of staff is on a need to know basis. We will inform the appropriate outside agencies of our concerns and what information we have recorded from the child. We all ensure that we handle the situation with the child as sensitively as possible but we never promise them that we will not tell anyone else.
Daily risk assessments are essential for the safeguarding of children in my setting we ensure risk assessments are carried out daily before any child enters the nursery, each room has their own individual risk assessments to do which will be carried out throughout the day to ensure safety at all times. All risks assessment checks are recorded on sheets in the room.
Every borough will also have a local safeguarding board (LSCB) which were established by the children’s act 2004. They are the key system in every locality of the country for

Law and guidance regulate the way you should work with children in your childcare setting to support and encourage their well-being and safeguard them from abuse and maltreatment. Legislation provides a comprehensive instruction on what must be attained in respect to child protection and safeguarding. Whereas Legal guidance is more precise and provides details on how the law ought to be applied and fulfilled in early years settings and services. Laws and statutory regulation are compulsory and should reinforce policies and procedures that are used in your setting.
In order to not only promote the welfare of children within a setting but also to protect them from harm and abuse there are a number of pieces of legislation and statutory guidance that must be adhered to. Both laws and statutory guidance are mandatory and so legally enforceable and must act as a foundation of which policies and procedures within any setting can be based upon.

It is everybody’s responsibility to safeguard children – This means every single staff member within a setting; irrelevant of what role they may have there. This also includes non-staff members, such as volunteers, student’s third-party companies (visitors, service providers etc). Each setting should therefore adopt their own safeguarding policy, of which has to be kept up to date and followed at all times.

Today we use the term safeguarding instead of child protection because it covers a much broader range. These changes were influenced by the first Joint Chief Inspectors’ safeguarding report 2002 and formalised in the Every Child Matters legislation outlined in the Children Act 2004. By safeguarding a child or young person we ensure they get the very best of the opportunities available to them for them to achieve the best of their potential while keeping them safe from bullying, crime, accidents, neglect and abuse.
