Developing Coaching Skills for the Workplace

Coaching is a powerful tool based on the use of one-to-one discussions to enhance an individual’s skills, knowledge or work performance. Coaching targets high performance and improvement at work and usually focuses on specific skills and goals, although it may also have an impact on an individual’s personal attributes. I have outlined a brief description of 2 coaching models GROW and OSCAR in Appendix 1. There are a variety of different types of coaching available and I have identified 2 specific types, Coaching for Talent Development and Coaching through Change and explained what they are and in what type of work situation they could be used in Appendix 2 . Both of these methods have similarities and differences in their approach when comparing to Coaching. I have listed these in Appendix 3. I have identified three ways in which coaching can support business objectives and these are by: • increasing profitability - coaching employees to be more effective will improve productivity and efficiencies and support improved performance in line with the overall business strategy. • reducing costs - coaching for talent development will keep employees motivated and retained in the organisation which is crucial for the on-going growth of any business. The costs associated with recruitment are high, and having a high turnover of staff can also lead to fostering an unstable and negative culture. • supporting employees to deal with change - coaching through change allows an organisation to better manage change with as little pain as possible ensuring the organisation returns to the best possible performance. I have also identified three benefits of coaching to an individual and to the organisation and have listed these in Appendix 4. To develop a coaching culture within an organisation, a business may decide to hire external coaches or alternatively decide to train the managers themselves in coaching skills.
