Developing a Motivational Plan Essay Motivation is the key to the success to any organization. “Human relation thinkers see the terms motivation and behavior as closely related because human behavior occurs as a result of motivation” (Razik & Swanson, 2010, p. 108). Motivating people to work harder, give of themselves 100%, encouraging the employees to not only work harder, but smarter to develop ways of doing things better can be one of the hardest jobs of an organization (Razik & Swanson, 2010). When comparing theories from a classical to a more modern version of these theories we should consider the differences that exist between them. As our society changes and the focus on technology and diversity; these classical theories still fit the needs of today’s society in the organizational environment. Several of these theories still exist for example, Chris Argyris’s Theory of supervision and structure; McGregor’s Theory involving respect, trust, teamwork, and concern. Path-Goal Theory is based on the expectancy model, “the expectancy models suggest that the motivation to perform a task is a function of a person’s expectations or beliefs about effort, performance, and outcomes” (Razik & Swanson, 2010, p. 108). To create a motivational plan for my school I don’t think there is a perfect theory, I think every theory has some positives and negative aspects to them. It would be imperative to learn about every staff member and know what motivates them as an individual. Let the employees be actively involved determining what they can contribute to the organization and giving each the opportunity to help set their individual goals; allowing each faculty member to create their goals give the power to each individual and a great motivator and incentive. When goals are personally set it creates accountability for each person and motivates them to reach their goal.
According to Maslow’s Needs theory, based on the fact that a person is justified as long as he still has not reached a certain level of satisfaction, has a better understanding of the fact that human motivation leads to a broad spectrum of their needs we could say that in order to motivate people, the manager has to give employees the opportunity to meet the needs in a way that together lead to the organization's objectives.
Abraham Maslow developed the theory of human motivation called Hierarchy of Needs. It suggested that people need to be satisfied by all physiological needs before move on other high-order needs. I learned this concept in my secondary school which introduced how Hierarchy of Needs can be used in business management. At that moment, I can’t realize how this concept can be applied to manage people in companies, since I was student. It was difficult for me to imagine how this theory can be practically applied in the business world. Motivation can be defined as the desire or inspiration to carry out specific tasks or to do something. Motivation is required when goals are being set and more so in their execution. In a work setting, motivation can be defined as a process through which individuals choose between alternative forms of behavior with the aim of achieving personal objectives. The goals sought by individuals can be extrinsic or relatively tangible such as monetary rewards and promotion, or intrinsic or intangible such as self esteem or job satisfaction (Armstrong, 2006). The path-goal theory’s focus is on the leader’s behavior that can allow for the employees to reach personal and organizational goals. A leader’s attitude has impact on the attitude of the staff. Leaders can reward employees when goals are met which can increase employee motivation, job satisfaction and overall productivity (Schultz, 2010). This theory identifies four styles of leadership as directive, supportive, participative and achievement-oriented (Schultz, 2010).
There are five basic theories of motivation. 1) Self-determination theory states that people have three basic needs. 2) Attribution theory wants to know why things happen. 3) Expectancy-value theory is interested in a person’s beliefs about abilities. 4) Social cognitive theory states that human behavior comes from their attributes. 5) Goal orientation theory wants to know the reasons for doing tasks.
Social needs acquired by such employees include love, acceptance and belonging. They must feel accepted and a sense of worthiness before they can work up to fulfilling other, more difficult needs. The esteem level on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is the need for appreciation and respect. After the other levels of needs have been fulfilled, the esteem needs begin to play a prominent role in motivating behaviour. Theory Y employees will be motivated to gain respect in their organisation by achieving company objectives and by showing management their skills and abilities. The top need desired by such employees is self-actualisation. Maslow himself said;
The subject of motivation has been an important component in both theoretical and applied literature. There are many reasons why the motivational theories have generated so much discussion. In an organization motivation has been considered an important factor because employee motivation is considered essential for an organization 's status within the business environment and the community. The two motivation theories selected for this paper is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and Herzberg hygiene factors.
This report will explore the problem of motivation at the workplace. Human resource practitioners now consider motivation as the biggest challenge to the modern workplace. Numerous surveys done in the UK and elsewhere in the world suggest that only a fraction of total employees is happy with their job. While brainstorming on how I can create my own motivational theory, I stopped and thought of the reason I am writing this paper. What motivation do I have in order to complete this paper and turn it in? Is it because I would like to graduate next Spring? Is it because I need a good grade so that I can pass the class? Is it because it is the right thing to do? Is it because I would like to really create and understand my own motivational theory and apply it to my everyday work life? Honestly, all of the questions above contribute to my personal motivation for this assignment. Everyday people do things, such as go to school, study, go to work, take care of their kids, etc. Why everybody does these things vary from person to person. I know that a big part of my satisfaction at work derived from how motivated I am to complete the work and what part my organization aids in that motivation.
What is motivation? What influences it? The term motivation can be defined in different ways. To become motivated, one must have a positive attitude to a variety of learning skills. Some factors that influence motivation include our peers, friends, parents, and environmental settings. Division four being high school division, attention is focused towards learning and what methods can be used.
