Developing a Student Centered Management System (SCMS) requires looking beyond the past’s teacher centered directive form of education delivery. Simply having materials or supplies in place and providing teacher-led academic instruction leaves the critical ingredient of the student out of the equation. I agree with Wong and Wong (2009) when they state, “Classroom management consists of the practices and procedures that a teacher uses to maintain an optimum environment in which instruction and learning can occur” (p. 167). In working toward an environment that involves the student in their education, the charge remains to provide a structured, safe, and supportive classroom.

I must be the role model illustrating to my students that learning is a valued, life-long process. I believe the environment I create must be physically accessible, organized, and a place where my students will feel safe as they engage in student exploration. For this to happen, a system of classroom management that allows for growth in personal decision-making and responsibility while also providing clear, fair guidelines of acceptable behavior conducive for learning by all members must be established. I will create an environment whose boundaries will show students that I want them to participate in a safe classroom as they learn about themselves and others. I am committed to being part of team of educators willing to fill a positive, growth-oriented role in the lives of the students I teach.
Ethical Standards It is the ethical and professional responsibility of educators to exercise due diligence in reasonably safeguarding the well-being of all students. This includes not only physical safety, but also emotional and legal concerns. I will accomplish this first through being diligent in maintaining an appropriate relationship with students. My demeanor will be such that there is a clear understanding that I am a friendly, supportive adult in their lives, but not a friend. I will routinely reflect on my interactions and how my emotions and biases may have an influence on my teaching. By doing so, I will be sure that I provide fair,
