Deviance as a sociological term does not mean perversion or depravity, deviance is exhibiting behavior that violates the standards of conduct or expectations of a group or society. When on the topic of deviance, we are discussing the violation of social norms. Social norms are the rules that a group uses for appropriate and inappropriate values, beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. These rules may be explicit or implicit, meaning they are either expressed clearly or simply implied indirectly. There are many different causes of deviance, willingly or unwillingly. When talking about deviance, a person can get a deviant identity in many ways. You can look at it in terms of physical or behavioral characteristics. When people acquire a deviant role, it is common to be viewed in a negative way by many people.

The four theories of deviance are The Learning Theory, The Strain Theory, The Social-Bond Theory and the Labeling Theory. These theories alone can explain the reasoning behind someone’s deviant behavior. But, in There Are No Children Here we see all of these theories being demonstrated. This lets us have an understanding of exactly why we are seeing the deviant behavior that we are.

I was ecstatic to be able to be involved with this program. I volunteered to help with the program for 4 years and it was the best experiences I had with children. I did multiple things for the children: I was a chaperone for one of the groups, I made there lunches for them one year, and also made the activities for the children to enjoy.

Deviance is an act that goes against the social norms such as rules or expectations. It can be something small such as running through the stop signs or it can be something big such as hijacking an airplane. Deciding if the act is deviant or not depends on the context (society, environment, etc.). According to Howard S. I volunteered at the Little Lights Urban Ministries. I had the pleasure of working with adults and kids but, majority were adults in a low income community. Little lights was founded in 1995 by Steven Park. Little Lights is located in Potomac Gardens public housing apartments in Washington DC. It all started off with Steven tutoring one child in an uptown neighborhood. Then he met his wife Mary and things started expanded. They started allowing 15 kids come over after school to do homework and bible study. Sometimes they would order pizza or buy chicken to feed the kids if they stayed over late. Not only do the underprivileged citizens of the Detroit metropolitan area benefit from the kind acts of the P.B.J Outreach program, so do the volunteers. It is most common that people find themselves self-reflecting after being a part of P.B.J. There are not many volunteering programs like this one. One of the greatest characteristics of this group is that is it not hard to become involved in. Also, you are not obligated to be a regular participater. P.B.J encourages their volunteers to return, however, understands that times are busy and does not badger you to return. In my own experiences, P.B.J is the best program to receive community service hours, as well as a chance to get a personal understanding of what it means to truly help someone out. As watched some of the people go through the clothes line I asked myself what these individuals would do without this organization. Where were they to buy clothes with little to no money? There were many women with children that received clothing and food the day I volunteered. However, I distinctly remember this one women who gave me the tightest hug when I handed her a water. With a smile she said, “Thank you. You do not understand the help that this organization has been to me and my family. God Bless, Thank you.” It warmed my heart knowing that I was a part of something bigger, something that truly made
