Deviant- case analysis is one way to obtain a control group in case- study research. In deviant-case analysis (see chapter 3), we take an individual as similar as possible to our case except for a crucial missing treatment (a drunkard for a father, a disabling illness, and so forth) and determine how the individual are different from each other.
