Essay One Dharma is the Hindu concept of duty. Hinduism believes that in each life we carry our karma and are reborn with unity from our karma. Karma is the universe’s way of paying it forward. It is the effects from our actions. Hinduism explains our life as a multitude of consequences from our actions. Everything we do as an individual is a part of a big web of consequences that plays a part in effecting others while being in a never-ending cycle of reactions. Hindus believe that our life is served to live through these effects and reactions from karma, and that the reason we are reborn is because we must pay back our debts. Until that is done, we will continually be reborn until the cycle ends by completing our karma. Our Dharma is that we must follow this in each life so that harmony and balance is restored. In Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna that his dharma in this life is to be a warrior to fight against Duryodhana for the kingdom so that he may restore good in his world and create peace (11). His karma is to bring balance between good and evil. His duty is to fulfill the karmic cycle and to see past just what is in his vision. Arjuna then asks Krishna what it is like to be freed of all debts of karma, and what is done on a daily basis where there is nothing and no one you owe anything to. This question is very deep and thought provoking, for it explains how one achieves peace. Arjuna says that he simply lives and has no worry or concern for what happens. He

The beginning of this class consists of two sections, Hinduism and Buddhism, both of which we have learned a lot about. Within these religions we see some differences and some similarities that one could relate the two with, and one of those is the term Dharma. When examining Dharma in both Hinduism and Buddhism, people may notice that they are somewhat similar, but they will also see that there even more differences within this term. To better understand this term, we must first define it within the religion and then see what they have in common with one another, if anything at all, and finally notice where the big differences are between them.
Karma is a belief that Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians believe in. Karma is simply “what goes around, comes around”. However, Buddhists and Hindus believe that karma occurs after reincarnation in the next life. Christians believe that karma can take place in the current life as well. Buddhism and Hinduism also believe in dharma, which are the ethics and duties.
In the Bhagavad Gita, the fourth discourse which is composed of forty-two verses, Lord Krishna, the narrator guides Arjuna- a warrior who is finding himself pondering about the simple principles of life while he is fighting the war. In the fourth discourse Arjuna learns from Lord Krishna about faith, wisdom sacrifice, ignorance, doubts of the soul, action and inaction, selfless service, and self-realization which ultimately leads to the ultimate truth, which is the path for the spiritual soul to reach its maximum potential here on earth and the afterlife.
Another key concept of Hinduism is that every individual is responsible for his or her own solution. This idea is mainly connected with the terms Karma and Dharma. Karma is this principle where actions of an individual influence the future of that individual. Karma is what feeds samsara, or your rebirth. If you have karma, good or bad, that is unresolved when you die you will be reborn again. As said before, the main purpose of life on earth for Hindu’s is to break this cycle of time and receive moksha, so every individual is responsible for taking care of his or her own karma. Dharma works oppositely, as it only brings you closer moksha faster. Dharma is one’s duty or course of conduct. Following your dharma without any personal agenda will bring you closer to your purpose in life.
Yet Dharma has different implications depending on the person and their social position. Men, women, elders and children have different dharma which also depends on their place in the caste system. The Dharma of a Brahmin is different from the dharma of a king and so forth. Dharma assists with the social order in Indian society, as it varies person to person but also on the position one holds in the caste system, but it help maintains that order. Whether that be a positive or negative impact on Indian Society. Which brings up the point of the caste system.

It originally referred to the people living in that particular region of the world, regardless of their faith. Hinduism is henotheistic, which is the devotion to a single god while accepting the existence of other gods. Their god is present in everything, and they believe that their soul repeatedly goes through a cycle of being born into a body, dying, and then becoming reborn into another body, whether it is human, animal or spirit. Hindu’s also strongly believe in karma, which is a force that determines the quality of each life, depending on how well one behaved in a past life. Hindu’s do not separate religion from other aspects of their life. Karma is the connotation of causality that past actions influence future events. This is the same for both Buddhism and Hinduism. Both also believe in an endless cycle of births known as endless cycle of births, known as samsara. and release from this cycle of rebirths.

Three of Ninian Smart’s dimensions where dharma is most relevant are the ethical, social and mythological dimensions. Dharma details how a follower of Hinduism should go about their life and so relates to the ethical dimension, it describes the interconnection of Hindu society which pertains to the social dimension, and lastly is a central theme to nearly all epics present in Hindu thus representing the mythological dimension. Where dharma is expressed within these dimensions individually it also serves as a pillar to which the three facets are connected.

The Bhagavad Gita is a sacred Hindu text that serves to illustrate many of the morals and ethics of Hindu culture, by way of the exchange between Arjuna and Krishna. One of the things Krishna tells Arjuna is that the war he is fighting in is righteous. Is this to say that all wars are righteous, that those of the warrior caste will know if a war is righteous, or that they have to guess and then suffer the consequences if they’re wrong? The first two seem naïve and oversimplified from the modern perspective, and the third seems unjust because regardless of caste, Hindus are said to be capable of fulfilling their dharma. Krishna also assumes that people know their purpose in life, which may have been the case at the time the text was written, but is no longer true. While in Arjuna’s day people were born into certain castes, today people are descended from a combination of what would have been considered castes, and often switch between castes within a lifetime. Regardless, Krishna’s argument for why Arjuna should fight seems relatively sound in that specific situation, but can be twisted to condone what many consider to be evil actions in others. Nonetheless, Krishna seems confident in the fact that it is a universal truth for everyone to know his or her dharma, and that he or she needs to follow it to achieve moksha. The truth goal of Buddhism is to attain peace within oneself, detaching oneself from worldly suffering, attaining enlightenment, and eventually reaching a state of escaping the cycle of suffering, the state of Nirvana. Even though there are many sects of the Buddhist faith, this essay focuses on the shared peace practices and beliefs Buddhism promotes, especially the concept of inner peace through reflection. The thing about Dharma is that it follows your status or your duty in life. This is important to differentiate because there is a difference between the dharma of a warrior and the dharma of a king. While in a traditional sense, dharma simply is an individual’s responsibility to fulfill their duties. The duties of a warrior and king are vastly different and so dharma can have diverse ramifications to its application on an individual’s life. A person’s dharma is what is right for that specific person to do but what is right for them might be an affront to someone else’s dharma. A range of factors such as caste, wealth or heritage combine to determine what constitutes dharma for an individual. A good interpretation of this is that in a general sense dharma of the Kshatirya is somewhat hypocritical. In a general sense, one’s dharmatic duty in society to condemn violence and taking of a life. However, the specific dharma of the warrior caste demands responsibility for the kingdom and therefore requires as a duty the destruction of enemies.
