The Jews wanted to survive but the Nazis did horrific things to them like starving them, beating them, so the Jews had to be selfish keeping them self some food, keeping themself out when someone is getting beat then the Jews had a better chance of survival. From the reading I noticed that Elie lied to the dentist that he was sick because he didn’t want his gold tooth removed (52). From this I can suppose that Elie wanted to keep his gold tooth so he could trade it for some food later or even to bribe a guard to leave the camp. This is similar to the dentist when he was taking a bit of the gold for himself so if can get out of the camp and away from Nazis. In the book it said that Elie watched his father get beat by Idek and didn’t do anything
One day, when Elie returned from the warehouse, he was summoned by the block secretary to go to the dentist. Elie therefore went to the infirmary block to learn that the reason for his summon was gold teeth extraction. Elie, however pretends to be sick and asks, ”Couldn’t you wait a few days sir? I don’t feel well, I have a fever…” Elie kept telling the dentist that he was sick for several weeks to postpone having the crown removed. Soon after, it had appeared that the dentist had been dealing in the prisoners’ gold teeth for his own benefit. He had been thrown into prison and was about to be hanged. Eliezer does not pity for him and was pleased with what was happening
The holocaust, or Shoah was a systematic, planned program of genocide to exterminate all Jews. This government based program was carried out by Hitler, and its allies in the Nazi army during world war two. Approximately 6 million Jews were killed, and if the murder of the Romani, Soviet civilians and prisoners, the disabled, homosexuals, and others who apposed to Hitler’s religious, political and social views were counted, this number would be more like 11 to 17 million. The holocaust is generally described with two periods, 1933-1939, and 1939-1945, the end of WWII.
Elie’s refuses to give up his gold crown because it is the last valuable thing he had left. After the dentist told Elie he was taking out his gold crown Elie said,”Couldn’t you wait a dew days, sir ”(Wiesel 52). This quote demonstrates that Elie wanted to keep his gold crown as long as possible. When Elie found out the dentist dies ,”I was pleased with what was happening with him : my gold crown was safe”(Wiesel 52). The author uses this quote to show readers that Elie feels his gold crown is more important than a human being. Elie’s actions demonstrate
Elie’s struggle through Auschwitz is terrible time, but through this, he is also able to overcome many challenges using his wit and ingenuity. Elie, who is about to get his gold crown removed, knew that losing his crown would be terrible, he “thought of pretending to be sick: Couldn’t you wait a few days, sir? I don’t feel well, I have a fever…” (Wisel 52). He knows how much gold is worth in the camps, for gold can be traded for bread or soup.
In the story he stated that “he wished his father would go ahead and die” Elie was feed up. He felt like he had to keep taking care of his father. He also was giving up on God. He felt like he did everything God asked, such as fastening and more. He was trying to figure out why God was letting this happen to all the jews. He even got to the point where he stated that ”Hitler kept his promises better than God has. It was really getting to him and he felt like giving.

Before Elie was transferred to one of the most famous concentration camps, Auschwitz, he had always look ahead at the future and what he could use later to help him survive longer. Elie must have had to actually sit down and make a plan on what he needs to survive this torture camp. Elie states on page 32 “ I stood petrified. What had happened to me? My father had just been struck, in front of me, and I had not even blinked. I had watched kept silent.” Elie’s father had just been struck by one of the officers at the camp. Elie had been frozen in the moment and wasn't able to fight back because he knew that he could be killed or beaten. Elie’s father was very important to him because he is all that he had left after his mother and sister were taken away from them. Elie had never experienced something this bad. This came unexpected to Elie so he had no time to retaliate. Also, on page 52, Weisel says “My gold crown was safe. It could be useful to me one day, to buy something, some bread or even time to live.” A doctor who had tried to take the gold crown that protects Elie’s teeth out, was thrown in jail and was about to be hanged. Elie knew that his crown had worth in the future and that if he didn’t have any food or supplies when he made it out of the camp then he could use his gold crown to buy food or something that he needs. He had acted sick to hold off the operation which involved taking out his gold crown. Furthermore, Elie was discussing if he wanted a new pair of shoes with another boy on page 48 “Alright, he said. “I can arrange it. For pittance: Your shoes. I’ll give you another pair.” I refused to give him my shoes. They were all I had left.” Elie wanted to keep his shoes because he knew what he needed to survive and get through the camp. Also, I
•The most famous book in the Holocaust was written by a 13 year old girl, and it has been read by 10 million people.
If you read the diary of a high school girl, what could you learn about her? The name of her best friend, what kind of a person she is, and maybe even signs of troubles deeper than the bad grade she got on her last chemistry exam would pop out at you. She probably would not explicitly state these things, either—they would become apparent simply by looking at how often her best friend’s name appeared within the pages, how she interacted with the people around her, and how she described her thoughts and feelings. Seeing things directly from her perspective would give you a unique look at who she was as a person, what her relationships with other people were like, and what her take on events was, all without ever being told what they were like
Examining any issue pertaining to the Holocaust is accompanied with complexity and the possibility of controversy. This is especially true in dealing with the topic of Jewish resistance to the Holocaust. Historians are often divided on this complex issue, debating issues such as how “resistance” is defined and, in accordance with that definition, how much resistance occurred. According to Michael Marrus, “the very term Jewish resistance suggests a point of view.” Many factors, both internal such as differences in opinion on when or what resistance was appropriate, as well as external, such as the lack of arms with which to revolt, contributed to making resistance, particularly armed resistance, extremely difficult. When considering acts

Elie has lots of character traits that helped him get through Auschwitz, such as resourceful, traitor, and determined. In Night, Elie states “I went back a week later. With the same excuse: I still was not feeling better” (52). Elie came up with excuses to get out of getting his gold crown out. He got resourceful and came up with the idea to keep making an excuse that he was not feeling well, until they got a new doctor and he got to keep his gold crown. He used what he already had to get more out of people later and use his tooth as an advantage. Not only was he resourceful but he was also a traitor. Elie just let his father die and his father was still breathing yet he didn’t move.“My father groaned once more, I heard: ‘Eliezer…’ I could see that he was still breathing- in gaps. I didn’t move” (Wisel 111). He just let his father died and didn’t even try to help him and he died and his last words were “Eliezer…”, but he is thinking for his own future and if he will live or not. He betrayed and was a traitor to his father and didn’t even say goodbye. He was also very determined on living as said by Elie in the expert from his book, “‘Listen to me, kid. Don’t forget you are in a
The Holocaust was one of the most tragic events in history which ended many innocent Jewish lives. Six million Jews plus many more were completely wiped out due to the effects of the Holocaust. It is still unforgivable for the things the Nazi party did and is still a very questionable subject on how they were able to accomplish such devastation. To be able to organize the removal of an entire population of people based on their religion not only takes high intelligence, but most of all takes a very twisted and demented outlook on life. Learning about the holocaust and the people involved is very important, as well as how it has affected our world today. There are many very fascinating things about the holocaust but three
