Introduction
Kidney disease has come a long way over the last few decades. As the doctors and scientist get more knowledge about what is available and what is the best outcomes of the patients; they need to share this knowledge. People who are in end stage renal failure need to be empowered, and educated into what their best options are for dialysis and transplants.
History
It all began on November 15, 1950, when a couple’s infant was ill with nephrosis and there was little to know about what to do and no known treatment. Ada DeBold, (the infant’s mother) and her husband Harry were beside their selves taking care of an infant with an incurable disease. She was one of the founders of the National Nephrosis Foundation which later became the National Kidney Foundation in 1964. The son died at age four but the foundation went on to take care of the patients and their families (History, 2016).
In 1960, the first Teflon shunt was made, and kidney failure was no longer an automatic death sentence. Patients were put on dialysis; treatment and hope finally existed. In 1972, legislation was passed that provided the federal government financial aid for all Americans with kidney failure. The End Stage Renal Disease law was established and Medicare absorbed the cost of treatment. This is the only disease that is automatically covered by Medicare (History, 2016).
