Diarrhoea is the process of passing watery faeces, accompanied by symptoms such as stomach pains, nausea and vomiting (betterheath). It is very widespread, being experienced by lots of people several times a year and is usually easily treatable (webmd). However, not all cases of diarrhoea are as simple. In fact, some diarrhoeal cases are life-threatening, killing approximately 760 000 children under the age of five each year (WHO1). Responsible bacterium and its natural environment The bacterium responsible for severe diarrhoeal disease (scientifically known as cholera) is a gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, curved, rod-shaped microorganism known as Vibrio cholera (WHO2 pdf p. 119). According to figure “how it spreads” and…show more content…
Additionally, V. cholera can be detected in aquatic environments through the use of fluorescent-monoclonal antibody technique (aem1). Major mode(s) of transmission and modes of control of V. cholera The major mode of transmission of V. cholera is through the intake of polluted water, such as that contaminated by feces (WHO1) or polluted food that is prepared and stored in conditions deemed unhygienic. Food can also be a means for the bacterium to spread if people who are infected do not wash their hands properly after going to the toilet and preparing food (microbiologyonline p. 7). Additionally, seafood, particularly shellfish (microbiologyonline p.7) that have been caught from dirty waters may themselves carry the bacterium and hence pass on the infection (WHO1). People are more prone to infection of V. cholera in developing countries in which there is no adequate sanitation. Therefore, people travelling to such areas should adhere to thorough water and food consumption advice as well as personal hygiene (ideas health). Generally, for mild to moderate illness, lethal dehydration may occur, in which prompt fluid therapy containing sufficient volumes of electrolyte solution is necessary (ideas health). As for those suffering severe dehydration, intravenous fluid is critical (ideas health). Those patients suffering from severe cases of deathly diarrhea should be secluded in hospitals in order to investigate the mode of transmission of V. cholera as well as
