Las Meninas Modes of Analysis Essay
Las Meninas or (The Maids of Honor) was created by Diego de Silva y Velazquez in 1656. It can be found on page 160, Figure: 1.169. Las Meninas was created by the use of oil on canvas. Las Meninas is representational art because of its depiction of figures and objects that are recognizable of and what is represented.
In the art piece, Las Meninas, Velazquez composed his paint in various ways. It starts off with a young women in the center of the room dressed well in a gown. Surrounding her are other women dressed similarly. This young women in the center of the painting is the princess and is the focal point of the picture. In Las Meninas, the artist Velazquez shows himself in there along with the king, queen and princess Margarita. Velazquez is wearing clothes that look like knight clothes. On his clothes there is a picture of a sword in the shape of a cross that might symbolize either him having a reputation as a knight or his desire to be a knight. Velazquez had an ambition of becoming a knight. But there were certain requirements he had to bypass. Their laws stated that only those from families of nobility could join, members cannot have Muslim ancestry and a crafts man couldn’t be a member. Velazquez was an artist and art was seen as a craft. Three years after his painting Las Meninas, he was accepted to be a knight. Another icon is Velazquez himself being in the picture with the royal family and the king and queen shows a symbol of him wanting to deliver a message to viewers or impress the king and the queen with his painting. Another symbolism that is apparent is the picture or the mirror that reflects the king and queen. Rather than both being in a pose in that same room as everyone else they are seen in a mirror. This creates a very interesting point that shows how honored the king and queen
