The American Heart Association promotes the consumption of fiber due to evidence that it decreases risk for cardiovascular disease and moderately reduces LDL cholesterol (AHA, 2016). The American Diabetes Association promotes at least 25-30 g of fiber consumption per day for diabetes management because it contributes to digestive health and satiety (AHA, 2013). Consuming a diet that may be higher in CHO and therefore also high in fiber may offer additional health benefits that could be compromised if CHOs were extremely restricted. The Role of Fat Another important variable in the proper macronutrient distribution for weight loss is fat content. Some research indicates that fat restriction may be as, if not more, effective at inducing weight loss than CHO restriction. Efficacy of low-fat diets for weight loss was demonstrated in a 2012 meta-analysis involving 23 different studies and 2,788 participants. It concluded that low-CHO diets and low-fat diets produced similar outcomes regarding weight loss, waist circumference, and additional metabolic risk factors in studies lasting more than six months (Hu et al., 2012). These findings were reiterated by a meta-analysis published in 2014 that included 48 randomized controlled trials and 7286 participants.
