Many people all over the world are using various techniques to convince people during arguments. The most popular ones are ethos, pathos, and logos. Depending on the statement that the reader is trying to send out to the audience, he/she uses a specific persuasive argument. Reliable and convincing arguments contrast one another since reliable arguments are based on the credibility of the speaker whereas convincing arguments are based on proven facts. The credibility of the speaker helps the reliability of the arguments, and this makes the people believe that what the speaker is saying must be true. When people have so much admiration and respect for the speaker, they are willing to assume the best about him or her, the benefit of the doubt, and still believe in what he or she says. They don’t want to imagine that this speaker is just telling lies out of respect and trust. On the other hand, convincing arguments are based on facts and figures so people believe that these arguments are true. Both ethos and logos can be very persuasive. …show more content…
Thus, because it is the Queen of England who spoke in memory of Princess Diana of Wales then the people do not have any doubt that her arguments related to the late Princess are very trustworthy. The people in England have so much respect and admiration for their Queen, and so they will most likely believe whatever they hear from her. Just the same, the people of England also loved the late Princess Diana of Wales, so it will be hard for them to believe that the Queen would tell lies about
In the music video, many rhetorical strategies were used to enhance the experience of the audience. For example, one scene in the video introduced the protagonist –Mika, who is a high school kid that gets bullied by his classmates. And by his depress expressions; we can’t help but to create sympathy to the character. Meanwhile, such idea to play on audience’s emotional feeling is exactly the rhetorical strategies of Pathos. Secondly, an interesting shot of Mika and Ariana Grande were presented by them mixing a pot of rats, and poisons.
As I began to read this article I noticed that logos was definitely used as one of the rhetorical appeals. The author attempts to persuade his audience by making a claim and providing some type of proof after each claim. For example, “Papa John’s says it has been pulling advertising associated with the NFL. The league, it says, has given some feature spots in return.” This quote was provided after the author mentions how, “Papa John’s is no longer going to advertise with the NFL.” The first example of how he makes a logical appeal. At the end of the article he also mentioned race, stating that “Most whites are not racist,” and how “To accuse so many of it is to see those fans simply walk away from the game.” That is a pathos appeal or in other
Overall the paper well explained the context of the e-bike system. The author truly delivered the paper with good ethos, pathos, and logos. Started by informing the reader who they are, they built up a credibility. Their pathos comes when they used so many techniques such as compare and contrast, narration, and process. The logos were being delivered on their scientific method where they use testable questions and empiricism technique. The simplicity makes the writing looks concise, but at the same time it is easier for the reader to understand the article. Moreover, they also do the deep research on each variables that they need in this writing, because based on the data, the researchers have been doing the survey throughout the years and
On a normal day at the public transit Rachel North was heading to work, but there was a strange feeling in the air. Moments after the train trundled off a powerful gust knocked Rachel to the ground and everything went dark. When Rachel regained consciousness she noticed people scattered about the transit car. She felt warm and wet. Rachel took a brief moment before realizing she was covered in someone’s blood.
Pathos/ethos/logos A lot of pathos were used a lot by Donald trump in the debate. For example, trump was trying to persuade to the people that the stop and frisk law would work. He was coming off in the debate, like that would be the only thing that stops the crime in the inner cities. Hillary was also trying to convince to the crowd how trump was a racist (which is true) and how he disrespects women. Donald trump also began interrupting Hillary while she was talking in her debate, when he felt she was saying something that got to him.
Aristotle’s three forms of proof are ethos, pathos, and logos. Aristotle created these three forms of proof to strengthen persuasion and provide rhetorical principles that allow for stronger analyzation of arguments. Ethos focuses on the “personal character” of the speaker attempting to establishing the means of persuasion. This proof aims attempts to analyze the actual credibility of the speaker. The credibility of this speaker can be formed through previous experience or the messaging techniques that create the reasons as to why the audience should trust this person on a proposed topic.
The use of Ethos, Pathos, and Logos is presented in the three videos provided through a wide array of examples. In the first video, Drunk History- Claudette Colvin and Rosa Parks, the writers use of comedy was used to provide a broad narration of a particular civil rights movement. Logos is a form of persuasion through the “[representation] of arguments and evidence in the matter under discussion” (Campbell 38). In the first video, the use of logos was presented by their wardrobe selection. The use of old time clothing created an antique like structure that would capture the viewers. The second form of logos was presented through the attitude of Claudette Colvin stating “I paid my fare the same as this white lady paid her fare.” This showed Colvin’s logic and reasoning to
In today’s world, our lives are covered in the sense of credibility, emotional appeal, and logical appeal. These three modes of persuasion are used to achieve the audiences’ attention and influence them towards an idea. The three modes are called ethos, pathos, and logos. An example of a famous speech that used these three modes and more would be Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address which was addressed in November 19, 1863. In his speech, Lincoln’s audience was the Union, Lincoln supporters, and the deceased among the Union. The address claim that America, which our founding fathers united, is sustaining many issues that have been affecting the stability of this nation. The civil war caused a breakup of our nation since many men died by fighting
Pathos, logos, and ethos are all uses of language for persuasion. Pathos is an emotional approach to persuade people, logos is the logical type of persuasion, and ethos is the ethical form to persuade a person. Martin Luther King Jr. used all three of these forms of persuasion in his speeches, but one truly stuck out from the rest, pathos.
From this course, I learned many different concepts. The one that I feel will contribute the most to my life outside of this class would be pathos, ethos, and logos. Persuasion is something that most people deal with often. Pathos, ethos, and logos are something that has a significant role in persuasion.
Alone, the use of only ethos, pathos, or logos would make for a semi-interesting story, but together, they tell a believable account of real events. Beatty makes use of all three techniques to connect with her audience and share her own story as well as hard facts that verify the events. The powerful combination of ethos, pathos, and logos conveys Beatty’s story convincingly.
Ethos, pathos, and logos are all devices that Barbara Ehrenreich effectively uses throughout her novel Nickel and Dimed to prove that America needs to address the commonly overlooked issue of poverty within every community. It is important that she uses all three devices because they help support her argument by increasing her credibility, connecting to the readers’ emotions, and appealing to their sense of logic. The combination of these devices puts a sense of urgency on the problem Ehrenreich is addressing and therefore creates an effective argument.
Making an argument or trying to persuade someone can be a hard thing to do. There are three different types of persuasions called Ethos, Pathos, and Logos which can make persuading somebody either easier or harder. These three were used even back in the time of Homer when he wrote the Iliad and the Odyssey. In Homer's book the Iliad Ethos, Pathos, and Logos are found and used many different times throughout the story.
As Meredith Grey, my fictional idol from Grey’s anatomy would say, “Progress looks like a bunch of failures”. A main focus of this semester was learning our audience, and convincing people of things through writing and or visuals using ethos pathos and or logos. I did not see the connections of any of my papers from the first to second semester at first. But my memoir from the first semester and my campaign project from this semester both use pathos, emotion. For me it was easiest to write about the pathos, but the ethos and logos part was out of my reach. I left some of my comfort writing the campaign paper using all 3 and it gave me a better understanding as a writer to keep in mind who am I talking to, what message am I trying to get across
The use of LEGOs is an extraordinary thing, but it is shocking to see exactly how controversial a small toy can become. People of all ages have been found to enjoy this toy. Companies and organizations such as MIT and NASA have even found a use for them. The toy has become known as a child’s imagination tool and has not been exclusively used for adults. The documentary shows that adults come together to compete in competitions on who can create the greatest LEGO sculpture. Many people may not know just how big this toy is used around the world.
