When the average American thinks of Indian family society, we probably have a rough idea. Usually, envision a ragged group of people who are squatting in mud houses. While the structure of the American family and Indian may be different, the roles of each member of the family are rather similar.
The ideal family structure India is a patrilineal joint family. A patrilineal joint family is a form of family structure the includes three to four generations all living under one roof. This specific family structure is considered tradition in India. While in America, most people tend to strive for what is considered a nuclear family, where the max is only two generations, the parents and the children. The way that many Americans view the nuclear family structure is very similar to the way that Indians view their own ideal structure of the family.
In the average Indian society, the eldest in the household tends to be one of the grandparents. They have a special role in the family, that simply includes teaching the younger generation the values and rules of their specific culture that they should live by. As far as authority goes, it usually goes the eldest male in the household. So, if the grandfather is still around, then he is the man of the house, after he dies it will go to his son, the father.
This is quite different in your average American family where you do not typically have grandparents in the household. That doesn’t mean they are not around, however. In the American
